A good smoke is a good smoke regardless of packaging, and I actually like the flashy bands if they have attractive artwork and are printed in a quality manner, like the My Father Flor de las Antillas cigars.

My Father Flor de Las Antillas - Cigars International

Those are great. 2012 Cigar of the Year winner.

I find it more difficult to take them off cold, so I tend to wait for the heat to soften the glue somewhat (actually asked here and got this advice, which does seem to work) I do like a pretty cigar band though........

Pre-2000 Habanos sold in cabinets did not have bands. Unfortunately they too have succumbed to the marketing gods and all cigars are banded now - some garrishly so. I suppose they need all the foreign exchange they can get.

Many manufacturers stick with smaller band. Only a few flashy ones IMO, Gurkha, BLBC, EZ and Camacho maybe.
