If you wear the glove on your left hand, it feels like someone else is doing it!! yuk yuk
Provided you're righthanded... otherwise switch.
I don't have many meers but the ones I do get smoked "without protection" like all the rest. I've never seen any problem with this. I DO however use a much different cleaning and care protocol to care for that precious white sea-foam!

Starting next month I will be releasing a new line of meerschaum pipe condoms.
They will, of course, be white and lubricated with the finest beeswax. I absolutely promise it will feel just like "doing it bare" but you will have the comfort of knowing you are fully protected.
Pre orders will be accepted shortly....

toobfreak, the color of glove (if one decides to wear a pair) does actually matter, as the dye of the cloth might stain the meer.

ashdigger, do you walk in forest fire "crime scene" with your white socks and flip flop? can't imagine how messy the socks would be by the time you find the culprit. :P

OK im gonna give up to be serious, have fun guys.

I have always wondered how Japanese ladies were walking with that white sock and flip flop thing.
They wear special socks with a divide in the middle.
I'm a lady (on the outside, at least), and even I don't wear gloves when I smoke my meerschaum. I can't imagine...

flaneuse, i imagine in the past people do that, with their smoke suits, fancy shoes, in a smoke lounge, when nobody had to work and there were english butlers running around, then it would make some sense. if someone wears overalls and white gloves, that would be micky mouse.

There was a time, our great great grandmothers' time, when a woman who was a lady wouldn't be caught dead in public with out elbow length white gloves on!
OP- It's totally understandable to be concerned with smudging the bowl of a brand new meer. Clean hands is enough for most.

I didn't like that SOB, shot him in the nuts with a pellet gun, vet was checking the cows and I asked vet to do that, I know I don't like it , so I wanted to treat that SOB.

I never really answered the Question, a new meer , I use a paper towel to hold it for 5 or 6 smoke, old meter no. A footnote sold all my cows and the Bull last year, I'm old and children beating up on me that it was dangerous at my age to wrangle cows, got tired of hearing that Shit.

Actually thats a fact. I got meerschaums down at Briarville for re-stemming, I loaned a hand full to one of my Turkish carver friends so he could get the 'cutty' shape just right and I got gifted one by someone the other week and I have never worried about holding them. Those of you who have had meerschaums from me know that they are usually well colored but I don't seem to suffer from dab marks on my pipes. Maybe since I keep them well waxed that may have something to do with it.

I am convinced that waxing meers started with merchants wanting to keep them pristine to show off to customers. How it came to be thought that wax assists in the coloring when it would seem to inhibit same is a mystery.

Don't lose perspective here, the pipe is a vessel in which we burn old leaves and slobber on. My meer is pampered only to the degree I don't break it...

Sure! How bout some photos! And, don't forget, diff strokes, diff folks.... I pamper my meers insofar as not smoking them while I do yard work....

I was always under the impression that the wax protected the meerschaum from scratches.
