I don't think any brand ought to be avoided on general principal.

I agree. Once you get above a certain price point, most pipe manufacturers make a pretty decent pipe.

For me - Ropp. I can't say they are bad for the price, but they seem like toys to me.

I know what you mean lol. It’s that late 19th early 20th century French pipe design that lended itself towards the diminutive. I have a couple Ropps from the Vintage line and they look like they were made for a child. lol
