I have heard nightmare reviews on Dunhill Nightcap as far as the nicotine content goes, but I find Royal Yacht much stronger in the N department. Is this just me?

I tend to be a person who is lightweight with most things....alcohol, etc.
I definitely get hit by the Nic in Nightcap, but I don't find it preposterous. The other night I slowly sipped a Savinelli bent apple shape full, and when I stood up, I definitely noticed a little something. But it wasn't a big deal.
And usual advice goes around here....full stomach, sweetened non-alchoholic beverage to accompany your Nightcap. And if you're that worried about it, smoke a half a bowl and see how you do...
Compared to my buddy who smoked a bowl of C&D Burley Flake #2, and promptly threw up......can't be that bad.

I've smoked Nightcap but not Royal Yacht (have the tin unopened as yet). My experience with Nightcap is, smoke

it first in a small bowl (or partially filled bowl), and don't smoke it fast. See how you do. I smoked it in a big bowl,

fast, and it made me somewhat lightheaded. Also, I found after the tin had been opened for a few days, it became

just enough tamer to enjoy, while it is still full strength. I find Dunhill 965 to have a low key nicotine kick, just

about right. You know it's there, but it's not obtrusive. Five Brothers has some nicotine, but it smokes so fast,

it's transitory. I like the stronger tobaccos in rotation with milder blends. I don't seem hooked on nicotine. I

wouldn't like that.

In their current iterations, RY is slightly higher in nicotine than Nightcap, in my opinion, but I haven't noticed a huge difference.

Thank you for the rapid responses! I just found it curious that in the reviews, Nightcap is purportedly the one you should sit in a chair with whilst smoking on a full stomach... Yet it was The Royal Yacht that kicked my butt sideways in almost the same manner as Peterson's Irish Flake. Not that any of these are bad, they just require discretion, Peterson's Irish Flake being one smooth customer that will sucker punch you like an angry boxer if you don't treat it with respect. I found the Royal Yacht to be a close second, while Nightcap didn't affect me in the least nicotine wise.
I suppose body chemistry has a lot to do with it like anything else, but I found Nightcap to be very enjoyable and completely non-agressive, while The Royal Yacht and Peterson's Irish Flake will definitely let you know that you've had an encounter. The Royal Yacht being a bit sharp and harsh in the smoke, while the Irish Flake is a very smooth creeper that makes you want to smoke another bowl even though you know that you are now stuck in your recliner.
I love the Latakia smoky flavors in the Dunhills, but that Irish Flake is amazing. For a mostly English Blend smoker, I'll go a few rounds with the nicotine in Irish Flake for the smoothness it offers up.
Thanks again for the responses... I thought I was crazy for feeling The Royal Yacht more than the Nightcap!

I would think Royal Yacht might have slightly higher N content. neither have posed a problem for me.

@ olewaylon... Ok, well so far it doesn't appear to be just I weighing Royal Yacht a bit heavier than Nightcap. At least now I don't feel like I am imagining such things. Thanks for your input sir!

IMO mso489 hit on a good point (excuse the pun).
I smoked it in a big bowl, fast, and it made me somewhat lightheaded.
Good observation. Wider bowls engage more of the tobacco on any given puff, and generally require a faster cadence to

keep the entire diameter of the tobacco plug burning. So you're cycling through more nicotine during a given time.

The only solution I see is to use a pipe with a narrow chamber on those high nicotine blends. Personally, I enjoy

Royal Yacht after dinner in corncobs since they generally have narrower chambers; and although an all Va blend,

Royal Yacht has great body -- body like a stout Burley, which makes it a nice pairing. ( Listen to me, touting corncobs!)

This is as subjective to each individual as taste, IMO. I don't notice much nicotine on pipe tobacco. Nightcap, and irish flake are ones I hear people talk about. I don't notice anything really on either. Nightcap is my morning smoke with coffee on an empty stomach here lately, and a fairly hefty size bowl at that. Now as those don't phase me i've had PS LBF take me for a spin before, and I've had it not phase me a bit.

@ rothnh... Funny stuff sir, but I completely agree. I'm definitely not a wimp when it comes to nicotine. I've gotten a few kicks in the butt from it, but never sick or anything unpleasant from it. The worst it's ever done to me was kick my butt into my leather recliner, and forced my wife to come drag me to bed a few hours after the smoke. It gave her a little "me time" and more often than not led to a little romance, so it was a win win! I'm one of those fortunate souls who has a wife that loves the smell of pipe tobacco in the house. Oddly enough, she neither drinks nor smokes, but will occasionally encourage me to smoke Lane's RLP-6 which I consider a small price to pay for her tolerating my favorite tobaccos in the living room...
The last time she peeled me out of my recliner, I was smoking S&G's Brown No.4 Rope... An absolutely wonderful smoke, yet the one that had her putting my pipe away that had somehow dropped into my lap. After that one, I tend to smoke that blend with a nice cup of Earl Grey as opposed to a single malt Scotch. I figured my guilty pleasures can only go so far before I burn the house down! Hehe
Pipe smoking is such a wonderful hobby!

Yeah, I'd agree with Steve. Royal Yacht has like twice the nic levels as does Nightcap, which is a lovely smoke by the way.
It certainly is... I love this English Blend! I was just wondering what all the ranting about it being a heavy hitter on the nicotine was, as I didn't feel it at all. To me, Nightcap is a just a great English blend with no particular heaviness in any department. Just a great mellow smoke with the Latakia that I like. In fact, I think Squadron Leader had a bit more punch, but in a good way.

I have not sailed on the Yacht, and it has been a while since I smoked Nightcap. I am not a big nic guy, since I never smoked cigs, but I did not find Nightcap troublesome in that department, as I recall.

Nope, me too! I have problems with Nightcap at times (e.g., empty stomach), but Royal Yacht really knocks me out. I can only admire those older folks who smoke one or two Royal Yacht first thing in the morning before breakfast without collapsing right there in their Lazyboys ....

Twice the level? I've been alternating between them and can barely tell the difference. As I said above, I'm talking only about the current versions.

I haven't smoked either of the new versions, but RY used to be much stouter than NC.

I've never had any problem with Nightcap, regardless of the amount that I've smoked, but Royal Yacht will knock me flat everytime. I've only been smoking for a couple of years so I wouldn't say that my tolerance is as high as some of the folks here, but the first time I tried Royal Yacht (about 6 months ago) it really made me quite ill.

I got some RY and really enjoyed the taste. I packed it in a pretty big bowl and puffed it pretty aggressively (mainly cuz it tasted so good) but towards the end I had to stop as I felt very sick. I was not prepared for the nicotine punch it had. I later smoked it again in a smaller bowl and really enjoyed it.
NC is one I have not tried yet. I will take this into consideration when I DO end up trying it.
