You want a bourbon that is more than 80-proof. Otherwise the bottle you hide out in the shed will freeze when it gets colder than minus 40ºF.

So Jack Daniel didn't die as a result of kicking a safe, but rather he froze to death? :)

It wasn't long ago when Jack Daniels was still over 80 proof ... and still worth drinking. :P

Well folks, today I visited a small village called Constantine close to me that is reputed to have the largest inventory of whiskies in the entire South West of England to enquire about bourbon. WOW...they had several shelves of the stuff and everyone mentioned above was stocked...I was amazed!
After a brief chat with the proprietor he gave me a sample of Old Forester to try and I really loved the stuff. Not a million miles from Scotch Whisky though perhaps a little sweeter than some.
Long story short I came away with a bottle of Jim Beam and a bottle of Woods 100 rum. Now I know where I can get pretty much any bourbon that takes my fancy I'm delighted.
They had all sorts of interesting stuff in there from all over the world including a £4000 bottle of 1957 vintage single malt!!!
Regards,
Jay.

Jay, I can't think of a better bourbon to try first than Old Forester. I absolutely love it. an excellent bourbon for a great price.

A fellow UK whisky drinker here. I need to be in the mood for sweeter notes of bourbon, but sometimes it really hits the spot. I also enjoy having it with ice, whereas I only ever drink malts neat or with (literally) a drop of water.
I'd say that Makers Mark, Knob Creek and Woodford's Reserve were my favorites. I have tried Bulliet but that was some time ago and I can't remember how I rated it. I remember distinctly disliking Buffalo Trace, so I'm surprised to see it getting recommendations here, I'll have to give it another chance.

Even though it was only a sample (shared with the missus) Old Forester shall remain in my memory as my first ever taste of bourbon.
Though it is a bit early in the evening I have myself here a glass of Jim Beam with a splash of water and it is going down a treat with some of my gifted sample of Mick McQuaid Plug (many thanks to Andrew aka Drennan for that  ) whilst watching the snooker on TV :puffy:
Regards,
Jay.

@mawnansmiff When I was in the States I had the opportunity to go the Buffalo Trace Distillery...what an awesome day that was!! Got to see the river where they get the water to make the bourbon, had the whole tour, saw how they make everything, and got to enjoy some tasting at the end (the best part!)...I really like their Eagle Rare and the original Buffalo Trace...if you can get Willetts Pot Still Reserve (i sometimes find it at home in England, other times not)...it's just as good if not better than Buffalo Trace and I love the bottle shape too...

Gandalf, if you saw what I saw on the shelves of Constantine Stores shop floor I doubt there is a bourbon (or Scotch, rum, brandy etc for that matter) that if still in production that is not in stock. Their inventory of spirits is unbelievable for such a small village shop...by all means look them up on Google.
Aam79, I'm sure you made a good decision there as Knob Creek comes highly recommended by fellow forum members.
I'm just so pleased I lost my bourbon 'cherry' after all these years :puffy:

Jay.
