I'm from before that.

No fanny packs, book bags, back packs, or etc. when I was a kid.

They were all just a lady's purse writ large.

When something needed carrying around we damn well carried it. With our hands. Like proper Manly Men.

so manly men do things the senselessly difficult way for no other reason then making sure people don't wonder if they might have any lady parts? :)

That's one interpretation.

Another---and the overriding view at the time---was that men and women were distinctly different in both physical and behavioral ways, each sex had evolved preferences and ways of doing things that were different, and mixing those messages wasn't desirable.

yeah but the things is if that was the case it wouldn't have to brought up. You know kind of like how people don't have a lot of conversations about the details of how we walk. That's the funny thing about things that are intrinsic they often are totally innocuous. Nah those aspects of it are the ones people rarely bring up or have any reason to. It's the ones that constantly change based on what someone else wants us to do. Kind of like how men stopped being all showy and wearing jewelry when the romantics wanted to get rid of class distinctions coupled with more men working in factories and jobs where such things became a risk to life and limb or more importantly productivity.
Personally I am more interested in being a person, it's a hell of a lot more liberating. Kind of reminds me of when I was a kid and people would say be a man and I'd either hear oh do something stupid and completely senselessly risky for no good reason or what the hell does having a ding dong have to do with that? Shouldn't ladies also do the same thing? :)
Oh here is a great example of intrinsic things being ignored. Men are gold diggers. We've evolved to be. Comes from how more of human history and probably before wealth was traded through dowries. But if you look at what men and what woman have supposedly found attractive through out history it's funny with woman it's all over the place. With men it's generally what ever are the subtle yet clear signs of wealth. For example in both Tudor England and in Japan when sugar got introduced and was super expensive signs of tooth decay became hot. Like black painted teeth in Japan. When rich woman where fat Rubenesque was hot. Now in the age of organic foods, personal trainers, kale, etc... being skinny is hot. When workers had tans and rich people were pale that was what was hot in woman. Basically it's pretty easy to follow yet no one mentions it. Why it's intrinsic. It's just nature.
Isn't being a human just a blast?
