Where to Find Decent Quality Affordable Leather Jacket?

So the cold weather will be approaching soon, and I have always wanted to own a genuine leather jacket. I haven't really been able to find anything I like locally, so I was thinking of looking online for something but I don't really know where to start. Anybody know where I can hunt for a decent quality genuine leather jacket? I'd be willing to go as high as $300 but would ideally like to find something a little cheaper. Anybody own one that they like, what do you like or not like about it, and what are some reputable brands that can be had for a good bargain? I should also mention that I would prefer brown over black leather if that makes a difference.

Just a plain old jacket or maybe motorcycle jacket, I already own a faux leather bomber and I like it, I just wanted something that was actual leather.

Schott's of NYC is the best quality I know of. They are the manufacturer of the Schott' Perfecto motorcycle jacket, for example. That was the classis "Fonzie" jacket. You will pay for the quality, though. Last I knew most of their prices were in the $600-$700 range. Their flight jackets are nice, as well.

A cheap leather jacket such as the one you posted a link to will work as a jacket. They will not however last a lifetime nor will they develop the amazing broken in hand and look of quality leather. Cheap jackets are often made from leather tanned in third world countries with everything from pigeon poop to urine. While soft they are not going to age nearly as well and the stitching, thread and construction on cheap jackets is rarely long lasting. Personally I would save up a bit and get something that will last a life time but that's just my 2 cents.

No matter your price range be sure and check the quality of the pocket lining & coat lining because those will wear out long before even the cheapest goat or lamb skin leather will. I have had tailors & leather repair shops try & sew up or replace pocket linings a couple of times and it just never works out. The first thing that usually begins to show up on the leather is small picks at the edge of the cuffs where you reach for things. I have a couple of jackets now with no linings left in the pockets so I have to be careful if I carry anything in the pockets.

I have had tailors & leather repair shops try & sew up or replace pocket linings a couple of times and it just never works out. The first thing that usually begins to show up on the leather is small picks at the edge of the cuffs where you reach for things. I have a couple of jackets now with no linings left in the pockets so I have to be careful if I carry anything in the pockets.

Amen to that as for some reason I've also found that out to be true with leather jackets. I currently have two where the pocket linings are completely gone! Go figure as I can't imagine why this would seem to be an inherent issue with leather pockets?

I've owned this LL Bean "Flying Tigers" jacket for 15 years. It is my primary winter jacket, I have the Thinsulate line model. It has worn-in nicely with no tears, zipper issues etc. I HATE winter, and getting to wear this jacket for another season is the only upside, it is like an old friend.

I like those flight jackets and may get one someday. I've also looked at leather sport coats as a way to "dress up" when needed.

If you don't mind used look at thrift shops. I picked up mine a few years ago for less then 30 dollars.

Used is good, and thrift shops are good, so you can look over the jacket before you buy it. Frankly, if you can last the winter with whatever coat or coats you have now, the time to buy a leather jacket is in late winter or early spring when the retailers want to clear their inventory. Name department stores usually cut prices steeply and have respectable quality jackets, often name brands. Macy's, Dillards, and such, whatever you have in your area. New jackets don't have the charming wear, but they do have a longer life ahead of them, and on deep discount, you can often get them for under $200, sometimes considerably less than that.
