The guys who are well known hobbyists (as opposed to industry professionals) must absolutely love chatting about pipes but I don’t think any of them are on the forum. Where do they get their fix of pipe talk if not on a forum? Some guys that come to mind are Fred Hanna and Rich Esserman or other Doctors and Masters of pipes.

Many that I know are on Instagram and Facebook. Others will be found at pipe shows and on Zoom chats.

Ah ! 🤔
That explains why I have not met any of them 😁

I frequent the Pipesmagazine Forums, and that's it for me
Delivers almost all the information I need on pipes, tobacco and smoking ephemera.
And a healthy dose of humour most days.

I doubt its a secret society. In my craft Im well known. While I know other craftsmen we don’t necessarily hang out other than on forums. And honestly one reason to do that is to keep your name out there.

Some are going to be more friendly with certain others. Others probably consider some to be hacks. There are also issues of competing with one another…depending on level and market share. It’s generally civil and friendly but the possibility for complications exist as well. All that before individual personalities.

I believe there is a bar called 'The Pipe Hobbyist' in New York's West Village. My understanding is that this is the meeting place for these elusive individuals. I am further told that you should only go to this establishment on Wednesdays since the place doubles as a gay bar/leather fetish establishment during the other days of the week. Also avoid the third Wednesday evening of every month since they do a 'Bring out the Gimp' night hosted by a competing pipe forum member from the 'Bramble Patch' in PA!

Thankfully, I never bumped into those Bramble Patch guys from PA, when hanging with the NYC Pipe Club guys.
They meet at the Soho Cigar Bar, but I don't think Rich E, etc. attend meetings. I think even Vernon Whig has gotten old enough that travel to club meetings isn't possible.

Neil Archer Roan used to go to a Northern VA cigar shop on Saturdays, but I'm not sure he is still that active in the hobby.

First, I'd say there are plenty of well-known pipe smokers right here in front of you.

Secondly, how do you know the folks listed are jonesing for pipe talk that can only be obtained through forum participation? Or that they aren't already participating, and we don't know as they are using a clever screen name? The only way to know is to ask them directly.

On another forum, I frequent a well-known individual (in this case a performer and small business owner) was an active participant, he didn't try to obscure his identity. Eventually, he was driven away by various trolls and folks who took issue with everything he posted. Maybe that tale sheds some light on why prominent folks don't frequent forums. BTW I've never seen Tiger Woods or Jon Rahm on any of the multiple golf forums I visit.
