Hi guys,
I'm interesting in getting me a Zulu pipe. When searching a few of the standard pipe sellers, all I find are the cheapos, maybe I'm just not searching right? Anyways, I'd like to get me a good quality Zulu maybe something between $110 to $150ish I should say, not just a Zulu in that price range, but a good quality Zulu in that price range (I don't really know to much about good quality pipe manufacturers).
The only one that I found so far is Comoy's Riband 87, but I don't know if that's a good quality pipe or not?
Thanks for your searching/knowledgeable help...
Todd

Price doesn't necessarily equal quality. I have two Weber zulus that were under $40 that are very nice pipes. SPC has several really nice ones from the likes of Comoy's, Savinelli, and Peterson.

The Peterson that I saw is the "Mimmo Provenzano", but they call it a bent Dublin, and I don't know if it's a good quality pipe or not,? and the Savinelli that I saw was the Oscar Tiger but again I don't know if it's a good quality pipe?
Besides the Comoy's Riband 87, I also found a Chacom Maya 88. I already have a Chacom, and I love how it smokes, but I know it looks wild, but I don't know about this one's smoking characteristics.

Did you use the pipe locator function on smoking pipes?

https://www.smokingpipes.com/search/the-pipe-locator.cfm
There are currently about 45 zulu's on Sp.com from Savinelli, Rossi, Ropp, Peterson, Dunhill and Comoy's. They are all good brands. I personally would skip on lower grade Petersons as they have had some quality control issues and dip the entire bowl when staining.
Also Mimmo Provenzano are one of my best kept secrets. He makes great italian handmade pipes at the price of mass produced machine made pipes. They are not made by Peterson. They start at around $120 and go up to $350 depending on grade and material. I've got an amazing mini canadian from him and plan on buying a few more of his pipes.

Also take a look at horns and bent dublins they can be very similar to zulu's. That will give you hundreds of pipes to look at on sp.com

Just please don't buy this bent dublin. lol

I've been hoping to buy it but haven't pulled the trigger as I've been trying to resist my pad. I've had it in my basket several times now and last night I was all set to buy it but ended up buying a pipe from a friend on the forum.

The Savenelli 404 comes in a number of different series, and also in their low priced brand Rossi sometimes listed as 8404, for example in the Palermo series. These are well finished and the Oscar Lucite Savs and some of the Rossi are designed without filters, if that's to your liking. All have good big bowls and classic zulu design. Chacom makes a nice small bowl zulu, and Comoy also makes a stylish one. You can go well into your price range with a Savenelli.

And to try to be helpful to the OP. If your sticking to your price range, I don't think you can go wrong with a Savinelli. They have several options to choose from, and you can either use their balsa wood filter or switch it out for the non-filter tube they provide. Quality is very good and should smoke well right out of the box. I have multiple Savinellis in a variety of shapes and have not regretted a single one.
Happy hunting!

fitzy,
Yes for some reason my browser is not giving back output when using the pipe locator function (can you tell I'm an Engineer Geek) at smokingpipes.com
Hmmn, I'll have to write some html code to figure out why :)

ok, I got on a Mac and now everything is working fine, and I can see the output of the search (stupid PCs :) )
Anyways, are Zulu's known for having a "small" bowl? I ask because the average "Outer Diameter" shown for the Zulus on SmokingPipes seems to be around 1.35" I like pipes at least 1.5" to 1.75" (Arthritis in my hands make holding a bigger bowl easier). I'm making the measurement at the top of the bowl. Are they?

I got these 2 pipes from Blakemar last month. They one of the last British pipe companies around and the prices are very reasonable. Good smokers too. I might add that they ship very quickly so I had my pipe in a week from ordering.

+1 Weber zulus, really nice, I found a few vintage/estate on Ebay including a Savory's Argyle and a Orlik, if a Zulu search dosent produce then try Woodstock, horn and/or Cutty as those shapes are very close and often clasified as Zulu

It doesn't fall into your price range - I picked it up for under $25. I regretted selling my white briar version so I was on the hunt for this one.

That Chacom was a nice grab. It was on my watch list for nearly a year. Glad someone got it.
