If you enjoy them you do. A pipe is little more than a straw, when done badly, you'll know it.

Now we're getting somewhere. For the pipes I smoke, a 320 is fairly small. How much bigger are you looking into?
I don’t actually know that yet, 😂 bigger than a 320 or Petersen 106? I’m still shopping trying to even understand how to read sizes

If you haven't thrown one in the trash yet, you know.
i don’t think so! I’m looking for a large multi hour bowl size, I don’t have one of those

See what you think about these.

Then there's much larger. My go to size tends to be like this.

A lot of the joy of expensive pipes is the pride of ownership. You have to be honest with yourself about that. It's tragic, in a sense, what an incredible smoke you can have with a MM cob or $40 briar pipe in some brands. But pride of ownership is not nothing; I treasure my up-market pipes.

I collect other things, guitars and yixing teapots, some of which just to look at. For instance, one of the guitars would need to be modified to be playable but that would destroy its worth as “all original”. I am feeling the same pull toward certain pipes because of looks and perhaps the “wow of brand” factor. I need daily smoking pipes I can leave on the deck sometimes and not freak out 😂

Man I'm happy to see that someone else here loves guitars and Yixings!

I’m going to go against the grain here as you seem determined to get another, more expensive, pipe. Do it! More expensive pipes actually do smoke better! It’s all in your head? So what? It’s the subjective experience you are after. If that means you pick up your more expensive pipe and hold it and admire it and feel good about it. Pack it light it up and enjoy the hell out of it more than any other one, if just for a while then it’s worth it to have that experience. Most of us here have done the same thing which is why we have the experience to share. As long as you understand that there is no guarantee that you will get the pipe and fall in love with it or that it will smoke better (whatever that means). There is a good chance that you will though and that it will be an all around better experience, if just for a while. What do you have to lose? You can re-sell most pipes for at least 50% of the value and often times more (providing you don’t toss them in the garbage).

I know this is not popular advice but I wish I would have done just this earlier on. I say buy the best you can afford. Get a fancy pipe or one you love with a good pedigree. Splurge. Its Christmas! Your tastes may move on someday and so may the pipe but I bet you won’t regret your time together.

If you have the dough, I say buy whatever suits your fancy. Life is short. Go big and no regrets. If pipe looks good and doesn’t smoke well . . . .then let your PAD go and get another. Its only money. can’t take it with you.

I know I am late to the party in this thread, but for me, I have a few high grade pipes, but I still find I smoke my cheaper pipes more often than those.

So in that regard, they just seem like a waste of money when they dont smoke any better than ones that were a few hundred less in cost, but they sure do look good.

I consider over 200 high grade, 😂 I know you can go way over that but I’m looking in the 200-500 range.
