I often refer to my wife as Queen Mondegreen; though, to be fair, English is not her native tongue.
It is hit or miss with choruses but there is little chance of an entire verse going unaltered.

She sings with the voice of an angel, while simultaneously committing atrocities against lyrics.
It is one of the things that I love most about her.

As a former line cook, we'd change lyrics all the time (like Guns N Roses "Take me down to the paradise city, lift up your shirt and show me ...").

But yes, I've misheard lyrics and with some songs that got me through rough times, I often disliked what the lyrics actually were.

There is a theatrical sense with music at times (more "pay no attention to the man behind the curtain " and less theatrics) that creates a shrowd of mystery and respect, which is why I don't necessarily want to know the true meaning behind the song.

“wrapped up like a douche in the middle of the night” the lyrics are actually “Revved up like a Deuce another runner in the night”
Deuce referring to a 1932 Ford.

Also when I hear the knack’s “my Sharona”
I always hear Cheech & Chong’s lyrics “my scrotum” pronounce scarotum
:ROFLMAO:

I knew I was wrong, but that’s what it always sounded like to me.

Old song, Lipstick on your collar, golden hair on you. My wife corrected me, “told a tale on you.”

And, I thought Frank and Moon Zappa’s Valley Girl had the line, “Open mind, for sure, for sure.” Actual line: “Okay fine, for sure, for sure.”

In the third stanza of "Runaway" by Del Shannon I had the darndest figure what the hell he was saying. What forty years and looked it us on the interenet. Who would have ever thought it was "Tears are fallin' and I feel the pain". As the sage once said "Who knew?".

I thought nearly exactly the same, knew it was wrong, could never figure it out, and didn't learn the correct lyrics until just NOW.............
Wow.
Some commonality here.
