I have over a dozen that others have made for me. Many that I have made for myself. Every time I go to my pipe club, I choose a different tamper. But the one that gets used the most is in my shop next to the lathe. It is basic oak. Nothing fancy, except I cut it off the lathe, before I applied any finish. Now it is my shop tamper.

I still use a lot of broken antler tines. Some I have capped with a copper tubing end cap from the hardware store & some I have not capped. Doesn't seem to make any difference other than the end cap dresses it up a bit.

Johnnyreb, good to see you back here.
Thanks Orley! Not sure I'll have much new to contribute though.
Broken tines & little spike tines work well & it's no great loss if you lose one. I think the end caps I have used are 3/8" dia & that's about the perfect size of tine to use. I even tried concaving the cap to see if it would help mound up the cherry sort of like Brad's clothespin idea, but it didn't seem to help much.

Yes, good to see you back, j-r!
1coyote- If you can delete a post's content, you can also edit it so you don't start a new one. I just find trying to post from iPad too much, and always have my laptop as the box of preference.

A pipe nail has been my go to since it's cheapest, but having just lost it in a field has left me scrounging for an impromptu replacement. So far the cap of my pen has been a workable stand in, but I found a golf tee laying around that I think will do the job a bit better.

Being an Indian I dont put much value on expensive tampers. My most used one is a blue colored golf-tee tamper which I got from Briarville Ric when I got my pipes restored by him. He sent me like 10 of those things. I do caryr a Czech tool for when I am out and about.
Cheers,

Chris :puffpipe:
