I got mad one afternoon when I couldn't find any of my pipe nails so I turned out this tamper. So far It has not disappeared to some dark corner of the house waiting to be found when I'm looking for something else.

Made in China, I think. My daughter gave it to me, as part of a set. It sits by my smoking chair, so it gets the most use.

I have golf tees, pipe nails, Czech tools and dowels but this is my go to, 444 Marlin case slides perfectly into that of the 45-70 providing a dual diameter tamp. Could also store a pick inside should one be inclined.

I have one like that made with a 44 mag and a 8mm. Holds three matches. It was a gift from a friend in Florida.

Index finger, left hand, is my most used tamper.
In my case it's the right hand. I have a couple of Czech tools that I use when I remember to bring one, but the index finger is so well located and works rather well.
That 8deco thing-a-ma-jig looks like it would work far better than my finger, but I'm sure I'd forget it in my desk drawer as well.

Yep I'm another 8deco bamboo fan. As I use my MM freehand the most that tamper is long enough to tamp and scrape plus the air holes keep the ember going.

My finger. First I use a spent matchstick to remove the ash, then a finger is great to feel around and break the tobacco away from the walls and move around, so that it all burns evenly.

I have used a nail set but the only 'real' tampers I have are the pipe nail and the Czech tool.

I find that a nut pick works well for cleaning out the dregs in my MM Freehand, and sometimes I use it on a more shallow bowl, if it happens to be handy.

The twig in an outdoor setting under the shade of a tree also works.

My Favorite Precious... it is joined to me at the hip, well, sorta. 8deco, picked it up at Low Country Pipes and Cigars on our last trip to Myrtle Beach for like $5 or so. Love the color! Love the perforated and domed tamping appendage! Love the screw-out pickanspoonerthinger! And dread the day when it goes to that place single socks go in the washer/dryer. WELL MADE!! I've been using it multiple times daily for several years. Have accidentally dropped it on concrete several times during The Winter Pipe Smoking Exiles to the garage... no problemo. Just recently got on of those bamboo 8decos previously mention - great value there too.

I generally just use my finger but I'd say my favorite is the rail nail just because I have so many laying around in surprise places.

I love the Lighter/Tamper Deal you got there! Me and my Brother inlaw where wondering where we could get one. We talked about it last night actually

My most used tamper is the one built into the bottom of my lighter.

+1 for golf tee's - natural unfinished 3.25" or 4", or a Czech tool
Nested brass cases: brilliant. I need to go through old my ammo cases. Old cases can also be shoved on dowels or other rods, twigs, antlers, writing pen bodies, etc.
@ashdigger: a baccyflap & a pipe tool BIC lighter sleeve. Never have seen the lighter sleeve. Awesome.
