The closest thing I've had to a plug is Black Frigate ? but I'm definately going to eventually order some jackknife plug and some others

This is a really helpful thread. Can anyone offer some tips about preparing a plug to pack and smoke?

I’ve had good luck shaving thin thin thin slices with a deadly sharp knife (I prefer an Ulu knife for plugs, but any sharp knife you can control under heavy pressure will work) and then dry for a few minutes before packing.

I’ve tried thicker slices but had inconsistent results so now it’s thin slices for me.

Sure there’s a thousand different ways though and if it works for you it’s right.

Well I am very partial to GHC Dark Flake, so the plug version is super high on my list. SG Full VA Plug is awesome, too. Revor Plug I'm still making my mind up... It's weird.

They're not as tight from the press as their European cousins, but Pease's JackKnife is a great one, IMO, and I'm really enjoying this new Spark Plug an awful lot. The latter is a Balkan style plug! Pretty unusual. Triple Play is good, too.

Isn't Plum Pudding a crumble cake as opposed to a true plug that is formed from whole leaf threshed tobacco. Any second now Woodsroad will surface and enlighten us on getting certain manufacturers to grasp the true definition of a plug! I keep trying to get him to write the Standard Tobacco Company of PA history since it is screamingly funny.

I think the only two I have which I’d call plugs are Peterson 3P and ODF Plug, both of which I like. I’ve added Salty Dogs to the list thanks to this thread.

I made the mistake of thinking C&D pressed tobaccos are plugs, such as Plum Pudding SR and Dreams of Kadath. I’d slice them thin, but then they’d crumble to nothing. I prefer the European style hard pressed plugs.

@Casual: Thats the problem. They might work if they used more Gum Arabic as a binding agent, however you would still wind up with something that feels like an off cut from a length of Balsa Wood as opposed to a heavy dense plug. Even the Germans make pretty good plugs and Salty Dogs is an well made plug so I just cannot fathom with all our expertise we cannot seem to do it here in the U.S.

PPP and Salty Dogs are current favs, with HU Krater-Plug a somewhat distant third (it's more crumbly). I've got some GH Dark Plug and some ODF Plug, but I'm letting those sit another couple years before I try them. I expect they'll also be to my liking. I like JKP, but prefer the ready rubbed to the "plug".
So yeah, that’s the one I was thinking of, is Krater Plug not a real plug?

@SpookedPiper: It is talking. Some was distributed to a forum member last year who I think managed to poison everyone in one of his tasting events. One went to my friend John in PA who I think poisoned his pipe club with the thing. Weezell, philobeddoe and myself steamed through one at the Ohio pipe show last summer and the rest are jarred up for the next Weezell/Condor tobacco and Whisky demolition derby! rotf
