Random story, I may have relayed this somewhere before - anyhow, I did a pickup gig with some Nashville guys a billion years ago when I lived there ...we drove out into the actual middle of nowhere to a pretty nice bar and played a fun, yet uneventful gig until the end of the night when someone shouted the obligatory "FREEBIRD!" for the encore...
I was playing bass on this gig - I shit you not, both guitar players knew the entire dual solo section note for note ...I played through the chord changes and watched in awe as these dudes ripped the shit outta that section. To be honest, that song is not hard to improvise over, especially with all the standard pentatonic scale language, really basic stuff ...but for two dudes to know that whole section cold from memory, as it was recorded, on a pick up gig was a unique treat to see. This also sums up most of what I miss from living in Nashville lol
