Hi Folks, since here in this formum gathers perhaps the most experimented and knowledgeable pipers all over the U.S or shall I say nationwide?I'd inquiry,if somebody would tell me what are the primary tobacco leafs which goes into the famous Orlik Golden Sliced flake tobacco? My guess if they are the Virginia with hint of perique, some burley perhaps and a very light of some sort of toppings?Thank You for your thoughts and Happy Puffing

I think it is supposed to have Perique, but many can't taste it. I really like OGS, but I can't find the Perique.

I feel like I get the nose of perique on the retrohale. I wouldn't bet my wages on it, though. It's academic anyway. It's a well-priced, tasty blend. Don't much care what's in it.

Great article, thanks yaddy.
It is an old translation error, which unfortunately has not been corrected, it should have read Perique instead of Burley.
They in fact did change the label. My tin reads:
"A mixture of golden, mature Virginia tobaccos from the traditional tobacco districts in the USA. The tobacco is pressed into cakes and matures during storage before it is processed into cut cakes.

This Blend has the natural sweet flavor and freshness of the finest Virginia.

Aroma: Fresh citrus and orange notes.

Cut: Flake"
No mention of Perique here! In fact no mention of southern Brazil or Africa either.
In the article it mentions it's original release date as July, 1958 - My birth year and month, now I'll have to crack the tin and see for myself what all the fanfare is about!

When I first joined these pages, this (OGS) and PS LBE were all 'the rage'....I got some early on to try and found that I felt the hype unjustified.

Oh, yeah, put some time on those coins or flakes and THEN you'll see, it was said.

Well, I've tried it again with time and it did become improved to my developing(?) palate and I kept a tin sealed for another go 'round some day.

Now, it's been about 2 yrs...that tin sits with a couple other VA forward blends....mellowing and awaiting special occasions.

I think some of us mistake the sharpness on the edges of fresher VA to be the 'spice' of Perique.

My experience with Escudo was that I fell in love with a fresh tin and when I smoked some that was at least a year in its sealed tin, it wasn't AS exciting.

I think the pipe I used initially for that first taste of the aged wasn't really a good match and subsequent bowls improved to my mind, but I don't think I'll ever get that same euphoria as my first time.

I recognize both of these to be well constructed and superb, but given the choice I'll go with Escudo.

To answer the OP's question, I'd say that either or both Perique to the OGS or Lat will yield added dimension.

VA's are much more difficult for me to 'master', and require proper cadence more than other blends.

Here in europe OGS sells around for $ 11(so I did have it thorough smokingpipes.com for $7 a tin)despite even with the shippings added,it'll be cheaper if no customs are gonna be involved in,let wait and see, though only it was a small batch order,,

ps. If there a perique in OGS,than only a very little hint, but do I find some toppigs there in as well?Yes probably, seems me like a very light Licorice scence greets me upon opening the tin,Best Greetings and to Y'all do have a nice start of september,Paul

Well I couldn't resist. I popped the tin last night and my first bowl of the day was OGS.
Sure tastes like straight VA to me.
Great stuff by the way!

There are tons of threads devoted just to this one argument, plus many, many threads were destroyed by this one argument. So, this is something that we have stomped till the horse is no longer identifiable as a mammal.
Who cares if perique is in there, if no one can taste it? And, if you can taste it, then you are backed up by the fact that the producer of this blend says that there is perique in it. But, by no means is OGS anything close to being a VaPer in the sense that this blend will give a novice any idea of what a VaPer is like, since only superhuman-tasters and one species of bat that lives in the caves along the coast of Bali can detect any perique in this blend.
Now, can we all get back to arguing over whether anyone can hear that damn tree that falls in the uninhabited woods?

I don't care if it contains perique. I love it anyway. :puffy:

Well I left a tape recorder in the woods in the hope of answering that very question. Alas upon retrieval of said recorder from under a recently fallen tree I found the device to be damaged and the batteries had run out and not a sound was recorded. Most odd methinks. :puffy:

No OGS in the UK, Jay? Interesting and unfortunate. I don't find it amazing, but I do like it as a (to me) fairly straight Va that is cheap enough to almost always have a tin on hand. I don't really get any major topping or perique, but whatever.
