I used to toss my unwanted pipes in the trash, but then I bought two estate pipes. One was an Eltang cutty and the other was a Heeschen P. Granted these aren't thought of as run of the mill pipes but still, someone didn't care for them. I love them both. So I sent three pipes I really didn't care for to SPC and got a small Becker pot.
The three I sent in were all gone within days and I love the Becker.

I talked to Marty before I sent mine of to SPC. At that time he said he had more pipes than he had time to list them.

I traded off three to SPC. All I can say is I believe they are fair, but they definitely like Petersons.

whatever's?!?! I'll pay the shipping, man. Feel free to contact me before throwing any pipes out.
You really don't want to know what I threw out a few weeks ago then. 8O

Hey! Don't quote me as saying "whatever's"... man. I said "WHAT". Totally like not a valley girl for sure.
And no, don't believe I'd have any interest in learning of something that's done and over. Offer still stands for the future.

I truly get where you are coming from throwing out poor smoking pipes but at least 7 of what I'm culling have a solid following as they are vikings and kaywoodies. I couldn't stand to throw out a pipe that's been around 60 or so years just because I don't care for it. Some were my go to's at one point or another and I wouldn't be able to just trash them. Some I was happy with when I ordered them but the more I hold them or look at them, there are things that just bug me. Actually, none of what I'm getting ready to cull are what I would call bad smokers. Again, not arguing, just clarifying a little.

If a pipe were un-smokable for some reason, I might not try to recycle it. Usually, it comes down to a pipe not fitting in the scheme of the rotation, and maybe not suiting my particular taste in draw, weight, finish, etc. Or being duplicative of a pipe or pipes that do the same thing better. To throw a good pipe away doesn't seem practical when I can turn it into payment for a pipe I prefer. I don't do this often, and over time, it becomes more difficult as the collection comes to be more gifts, old favorites, personal treasures, and so on. My Yello-Bole isn't any kind of fine pipe, but it is a good little briar, clencher, and a nifty flake smoker.

Holy crap! I just noticed it did that! Apologies my friend, that was not intentional.

A pipe you don't like, even a pipe you deem "unshakable" - oh, that spell check; I wrote "unsmokeable"- even a pipe you think is rotten, might well do fine with and for another. (Now, there are some terribly made pipes, crap material, worse engineering, etc. that should be trashed.) But none of the denizens here would ever buy such a pipe would they??

It's cool, man, got that Zappa song stuck in my head though.
Okay if you have pipes cluttering the house/bugging you and they're not what they once were or you just don't like them, let me know and if I like anything you'll get a clean pipe in return for your garbage. Provided I don't get inundated with junk pipes that goes for anybody. I expect people will keep tossing them out.

I have a number of pipes that I don't smoke very often but it's not because they are bad pipes. They are ones I rescued from antique/collectible shops and have cleaned and polished. I won't be throwing them out because I bought them specifically because of their age and brand and they sit in my pipe cabinet to be looked at - I tell my wife, just like her collection of salt & pepper shakers.
Others are ones I bought thinking they were better than they were but they are not the type you see on smokingpipes.com.

One mans trash is another mans treasure. An aquintance of mine quit smoking years ago and threw a bunch of Dunhills in his fireplace. Well, you could start burning money as well with this attitude....

Like, oh my God! Your friend, like, needed an intervention or whatever!
Sorry. By the end of this read, I too was hearing that Zappa song.

Why not? Not a lot of difference in burning money in the bowl. A fitting way to quit smoking I think. After all the moneys the pipes cost him, plus the moneys spent on blends, he put an end to it in a very deliberate and final way. I'm impressed, not aghast. I bet he found some personal satisfaction in watching them burn. Should I find myself in the same situation I think I'd follow his lead and take vengeance on tools also. I love the irony! :worship:
