What To Do About Mold In Unnamed Manufacturer Tins

Since the last two threads about mold in a certain manufacturer's tins were abruptly closed for no good reason, in my opinion, I still had unanswered "mold questions" pending. So let's discuss in the abstract so as not to cross the line. I have 21 tins of a blend that will remain anonymous. The blend is subject to the deeming date kill-off. I asked for some advice from the forum members, but thread closed. After discussing issue with unnamed manufacturer/retailer, I have decided, I think, to open them all and jar them and see what happens. I could just send them back for 21 new tins, but I am just not a returner if I can avoid returning a purchase. If I don't open the tins, and the deeming date stays as is, after about a year from now I am SOL if there is a problem. The tins are not vacuum-sealed, so there is O2, and the nice guy on the phone said more O2 would just speed up the process and reveal any problems quicker. So, what say you all, jar them up or just send them back unopened? I really want to put some time on the blend on way or another.

I would say, if they are offering send them back. Thats like 200 bucks. I had a tin of ________ just about blow up from swelling, before I opened it up to see whats going on..MOLD CITY. I would also say stick with _____ _______ I have never had a problem with them molding!

I agree with the nice guy on the phone. It seems all these tins are fine upon opening, but the mold develops later.... that tells me that the extra O2 "triggers" the spores to grow. I would bet if you open and jar them, they would turn into a moldy mess. Also, if you had multiples in the same jar, a bad one would contaminate all the good ones..... like strawberrys in those plastic containers you find in the back of your fridge.
I would be inclined to let them rest, unopened. Someone mentioned microwave earlier. Maybe in 2-5 years when you open one, microwave it for 20-30 seconds? I don't know........ the key here I think is to find a way to kill the mold spores... maybe they die after a few years? Sorry I don't have a definite answer...... ::

I'm in the same boat. My thinking is this...if I have to open a tin, wait to see if mold develops and mold does happen then I definitely didn't want to smoke it immediately upon opening because of latent mold spores present. I am sending questionable tins back rather than chance potential mold problems.
EDIT...just read beefeater33 post, why should we want to go through all that trouble and potential health hazard for some tobacco?

I noticed that a more recent release, a certain Italian dark fired blend, was much drier straight out of the tin. It has a component that I was sad to see get pulled back, I'm hoping these will be fine. Smoking through the open tin that I have here. If it molds, I'll know what to do, as sad as it might be.
I'd open one, jar it and wait and see. If you purchased them all around the same time, you'll have a good idea of what the others might do.

Send them back to retailer for a fat credit. Buy tobacco that's not had a history of being problematic with that fat credit.
You wouldn't be SOL, as you say, if after you keep them and open them in the future, you find a problem. I'm sure the retailer would still find a way to satisfy you.
That said, I'd return them for the aforementioned fat credit.

I don't buy 20 of anything at a time, but I get why people do if they have the means. If it were 1, I'd keep it and "risk it". With 20, no way, Jose.

.just read beefeaters post, why would we want to go through all that trouble and potential health hazard for some tobacco?

For a couple reasons:

1) I've heard this is a kick ass blend, that should age well.

2) I've never been in the "mold is health hazard" camp........ I like moldy cheese, I pick the mold off of fruits,bread etc...

I grew up on a farm, with mold EVERYWERE, it doesn't scare me, but I know some worry about it.

3) This one always gets me!....

Worrying about a bit of mold while puffing on known carcinogens.......... :rofl:

No worries. I agree and have sat on this lot of tobacco since August. I only decided to return after repeated reports of mold after opening. Definitely frustrating to say the least! ::

Personally, I'd jar it to observe (it will get plenty of O2 in the transfer and what's in the jar).

I say this because I've had one of the blends mentioned dated 6-7-16 opened for about 4 weeks with no problems. In fact, this one that rhymes with Bemple Tar was so yummy that it's almost gone. I have 4 more dated the same time and plan on opening another soon and sitting on the others for a couple years.

I'm keeping what I have of the problematic blends. I kept 5 tins of the recalled blend with only one getting moldy. I have a worse track record with produce. They seem to have done a good job in responding to the issue. I will continue to buy their blends while hoping they get a handle on the problem.

Since this thread is not about a specific blend......I purchased some blackberries that turned moldy, so can I jar them and see if the mold grows or should I freeze them for 10 years and microwave them at that time I want to consume them?
