Exactly. What most people in other countries "know" about U.S. citizens is what they see in movies and on tv shows that are exported overseas. Then on top of that is the daily circus featuring politics and the news media.

In other words, stereotypes are based on perceptions from entertainment and are not really factual.

Curious as to why it's not required for members to put their country of residence in their profile. It sure would help, especially when members want tobacco recommendations. If I'm too off topic Mods, just delete this post.

I can't speak for all Americans but for a few acquaintances in Texas, but generally speaking I have only good to say, where I younger I could imagine myself living there, permanently. Happily I have only met heartful, socially intelligence and generous folks from The U.S

It's a mixed bag in my own experience. You have people who do business, have relatives, have traveled here or for whatever reason, are truly familiar with our country. Then you have the flip side, those who know the USA only from media. The former seem to mostly think positive things about our country although many think we're a bit arrogant. Well, probably and rightly so. They may be slightly envious of the standard of living we have.

Those who only know us from what they're told having feelings ranging from thinking we're the devil to thinking we're heaven.

There's no question, there are many other countries on this planet where it can be nice to live. I also don't think most Americans have any idea how privileged and spoiled we are. We're not perfect but I love this country.

Ok I’ll bite, especially since I’m from NZ and most of y’all think that’s part of Australia...so any rhetoric will probably be based upon Australian generalisations, which I will find extremely funny.

Speaking as a non-American, the main stereotype is that you guys are obnoxious and obsessed with yourselves.

HOWEVER, I have never been stateside, and the only Americans I have had the chance to know personally (as well as Smoking Pipes customer service. Lol) have been some of the kindest people I have met.

My comments are not an attack but rather trying to answer the OPs query thoughtfully

And now let the tirade begin...

[edit: for sake of clarity, I should add that the stereotype I mentioned above is it my own but is the one I encounter the most regularly]

I have a sister who is married to an American and who has lived in the States for close to 20 years, have close friends who live in the the US, worked with Americans and of course have done some travelling there. Based on my experience Americans are diverse, friendly, committed to family, friends and are patriotic. I see these characteristics in the positive aspects of the stereotypes, which are what I prefer to focus on.

So guys I will only say positive things in this non political place. I am in love with the US for many years. Since my first trip with my parents in the early 80's (to visit Family in Nashville) I must have been traveling for work and fun about 16 times. Last 6 years saw 4 major 4-5 week trips in summer with the family and kids. Seen most of the west coast up to Canada (BC), the SW, the north East and South. I general I find people interested, open hearted, easy to talk to (a major difference to Europe) and child friendly. The more rural and south the more of the above. I literally never had negative experiences.

Ironically, you and several other posters here have a wider range of experience with the variety of people living in the different parts of our country than most Americans, who do not have the means or opportunity - or, in many cases, the desire - to travel the country.
