I’m very new to the activity, so my example might be pretty simple. Based on the character of the smoke I push out of my mouth I can tell if there is more water vapor than there should be, so I’ve probably been smoking too fast/hot and need to slow down. The smoke is kinda wispy and dissipates quickly.

Any other experiences or observations you folks have picked up on over time?

Sounds like you may benefit from drying your tobacco more. As to what the smoke looks like, that varies between smokers. I produce little to none and those around me, were they not knowing I was a smoker, would assume I just liked walking around with a pipe in my mouth.

I’ve been experimenting with levels of dryness, from crispy to sticking together when pinched. The crispy is mostly from what a pipe-smoking friend passed to me to try. Despite the moisture level, a couple of my briars I’ve not had a good smoke from top to bottom, good bit of wet dottle in the bottom. My country gentleman smokes 100% consistently. Thanks for the input!

I was more curious about things people have picked up on over time, doesn’t have to be with smoke specifically. It’s hard for me to come up with another example because I don’t have the experience to know what it could be…. Maybe you’ve noticed your smoking experience changes with certain weather, or a certain blend gives you a hankering for a particular meal?

Living here in the armpit of Florida (North Central, Micanopy to be exact), it's humid most of the year. But when it's not humid, man it can be really, REALLY dry, and my body being so used to the humidity, sometimes has a hard time transitioning. It's at these times when I absolutely cannot smoke Latakia blends. There is something drying in the nature of tobacco to begin with, but something about the Latakia, and possibly the astringency of the orientals, is not conducive to the dry weather. That could be my own biology, but I think it's an overall elemental thing.

I've also noticed that if I put too much flame to the tobacco, the next several puffs taste more burnt, acrid, and unpleasant, possibly because the sugars and other elements in the tobacco just got too hot, and once those parts that were subjected to too much flame have burnt to ash, the good flavor comes back. I only notice this when I pay close attention, I don't sit there and baby the pipe all sensitive-like all the time. I enjoy picking up in this sort of thing, but I can definitely tune it out and just puff away.

I love the minutae. Kill me. But I certainly don't get lost in it. If I think of more, I'll chime in. But there are folks here that know far more than I do. If you ever wanna talk about minutae of pipe lighters and hemp wicks let me know...

For me, not really. I've had a pipe in my jaw from the time I wake up until I go back to bed for decades now. It's just a mindless activity I do.

Can you tolerate burley heavy blends in the dry heat? I’ve found those tend to be a dry smoke for me.
I’ve definitely started to pick up on the charred taste when I get impatient with my relights, haven’t zeroed in on whether a certain blend has it worse than others, but it seems to be consistent to some degree.

That makes sense. The newness of it all is still very exciting for me and certainly frames my experience right now. I know it won’t last forever so I’m letting myself revel in it. Really enjoying just looking through the pipes and tobacco I’ve picked up so far, the tins I haven’t yet opened to try for the first time, the tins and mason jars of my favorites I’ve stashed away to cellar. Good times.

Mileage will vary depending on the person, as I am sure there are plenty of folks who smoke Latakia/oriental blends (Englishes) in dry weather. But for me, I am a burleyphile through and through, and I smoke them year round. Your body will get used to whatever you give it, really.

I used to be sensitive to the nic hit in the heat (dry or not) but now, after smoking so much Picayune, C&D Burley Flake 1 and other strong blends, it doesn't really matter anymore. The Latakia sensitivity is probably because I have less experience smoking them, so my body isn't used to them.

In general, and from a Chinese medicine standpoint, tobacco is very drying. It drains dampness from the body. I've noticed broadly that I smoke a little less when it's dry outside.

I’m finding myself reaching for burley more and more often, it will definitely become a staple for me. I haven’t tried many, but MB Burley Flake I’ve really enjoyed. Found C&D OJK very strong and in-your-face at first but am growing to quite like it, almost as if my mouth is adjusting to the smoke? Opened some C&D Pegasus to transfer to a jar tonight, haven’t given it a run yet. Any others you would recommend?

Oh buddy.... you're in the right track. Come join the Dark-ahem-Burley side... Lol

OJK is definitely on the stronger side of things, smoking some of that right now. I would try Cornell & Diehl's Burley Flake 1, 2, and 3, and 5 for a slightly sweeter, semi aromatic blend. C&D Pegasus is wonderful, as is C&D haunted bookshop, C&D Oak Alley, C&D Riverboat Gambler, Solani Aged Burley Flake, Daughters and Ryan Two Timer, and some others I can't think of. All those are great Burley blends.

There's no lack of enjoying it for me now, I just no longer have to overthink the process and can just relax and enjoy smoking.?

However you want to look at it I’m glad to hear the experience for you has stayed enjoyable once the newness wore off! I hope my experience is similar, I’ve always had an enjoyment of smoking, just glad it’s no longer cigarettes.
