Generally I hate music. There are lots of exceptions of course. But the idea that there must be music can be very unpleasant. On the telephone, in elevators restaurants and elsewhwere silence is abhored and music played. I do like some music, but prefer silence to any of it.

In keeping with the Scot part of my Ulster-Scot heritage, Enter the Haggis. Nothing like bagpipes meet rock. Next weekend, plan to indulge in a little haggis @ a nearby Scottish festival.

I really don't like the absense of music. Even if I'm not listening to it actively I hear it in my head. But that's just me. And I really don't like silence.

Ironic I'd say!
Yeah, I was trying to be clever. :)
I really don't like silence.
Over the years I've really come to appreciate ambient sound. It uses no electricity and never repeats. I think I get it from practicing meditation. There really IS music all around us in birds, wind blowing tree leaves, bugs whizzing about, and the ever popular cars driving by. I've been listening to my wind chimes when I am on the porch smoking and it really relaxes me. "Silence is golden" they say and I somewhat believe it. I can't have music blaring when I drive because I can't concentrate. Weird. A musician friend of mine told me I compose many songs with a lot of negative space (silence) and that makes sense. However, I do love a good wall of noise on occasion! Eastern music has had a big impact on me.
I got this on vinyl years ago and it is very mellow and soothing...

I interpret Foggy's message a being a remark about people's inability to respect and value silence; the people who hate to be alone and always have the TV or radio on from the moment they walk in the house. I doubt many of us pipe smokers tend to be that way though as, at least for me, pipe smoking stimulates reflection.

I totally get Foggy's point as well as you others. And although I can appreciate silence and ambient sounds I am so obsessed with music that it becomes a part of everything I do. I personally find that picking an appropriate album is as important a part of my smoking ritual as the pipe and tobacco blend I choose. I sometimes find myself spending 10 minutes picking what to listen to on my iPhone as I mow the yard. I believe it may be a sickness that I need to work on. But then again maybe not.....because I really enjoy it.

Finished listening to the Stuttgart piano trio's rendition of some Beethoven trios with my morning joe and pipe. Yesterday was taking in some great nature sounds in a nearby waterfowl refuge while bird watching, a grand one. Hundreds of egrets along with some gray herons and pelicans. Those marsh sounds full of life. Music would have spoiled it.
