I just finished season two of "Kin", an excellent Irish version of The Sopranos. They featured two songs, by an Irish punk band that I was unfamiliar with, The Golden Horde. (Think Irish version of the US' The Chesterfield King). The Friend song that wraps the finale was really good, and created a revival for this 90's era band.

I went to see Madama Butterfly at the lyric opera, and I have never been to a more boring opera, I literally went to sleep during it. They could sing the songs, but everything was so slowly paced you thought you were watching grass grow. Then a few years later they offer a new production of it with Elizabeth Caballero in the title role and my god I never heard anything like it. The story moved with a vigor that the other production so sorely needed. Caballero was truly amazing that night.

I can agree with you on this. Some singers can really embrace the character both with their voice as well as their acting. I could never find a singer that could equal the rawness of the character of Carmen as portrayed by Maria Callas until I saw a performance of Elina Garanca sing the role of Carmen. She brought a modern take of true nastiness to the role. She won me over!
