I really enjoy collecting And restoring in expensive pipes That I find in thrift shops in antique stores. I have found some great pipes and smoke most of them




Size of your pipe collection -
Well, I have restored well over 1000 pipes but I keep about 200 for my own use. Those include 15 Artisan pipes and the rest. I have gathered from various sources over the years and are relatively inexpensive.

I do smoke my pipe indoors and my family really never mentions it but if I had my choice, I would always be outside with a good pipe

Absolutely! Of course, I try to be considerate of others around me and always follow the law, but I don't hesitate to light a pipe in public




How often do you smoke your pipe? -
When I was working, I would usually smoke 2 to 3 bowls a day, more on weekends. Now that I'm retired I average 6 to 10 bowls a day.





Favorite place or setting for a good pipe smoke? -
Around a campfire either with my family or with other pipe, smoking buddies. I also like to sit by a fire and read a good book while smoking my pipe.

Once I started drying my pipe tobacco to just south of crispy, I get next to no tongue bite.

I will have smoked a pipe two years this July. I only smoke a pipe. I have 3 pipes my favorite is a Savinelli 828, the first pipe I bought. I only smoke a pipe. I usually smoke in my bedroom with the window open and a fan to blow the smoke away; in winter I have an air filter which does well. I have smoked in public and have been told by passers by that they have not seen anyone smoking a pipe in years, which is sad. I smoke 6 plus bowls a day. I have enjoyed smoking at home but smoking in my Honda CRV is great it even has a pipe holder. I doubt they intentionally made it that way but on the driver's side door is a pocket that fits my pipe like it was made for it. Challenges I face would be the lack of local tobacco. If I want good pipe tobacco I pretty much have to order it online or go to Lexington (100 miles away). I don't get tongue bite now, that was more of an issue when I first started. I have learned how to have a relaxed smoke now.

When I smoked at work (I am retired now) I had to smoke in the car (25 feet from the building). I envy you for being able to smoke in the building at all. My workplace was a living hell, boss played Magic the gathering with co workers while others put up Disney puzzles on the walls. My advice in your situation would be to have a good pipe holder in a safe place and relight after you are active. I think it would be difficult to smoke and be active; at least difficult to enjoy the smoke. Oh I did take down the puzzles, someone had to

Cigars, but the pipes have pushed the cigars out almost entirely

Combination, but drawn to the artisans.

Size of your pipe collection?

About 20, but still learning a lot about the shapes I prefer, so I expect the makeup will change. Currently a few straight Dunhills, Claudio Cavicci, a cool Forman egg, GBD (pre-1980) billiard, a couple beauties from Mr. Spitaletti, a Smio Satou bent Dublin, Il Cerchio volcano, Emiliano elf, several Savinelli autographs and (my first pipe) one great relatively inexpensive Savinelli church warden (a Clark’s favorite), a Peterson Sherlock, and a couple meerschaum pieces (a basic Rhodesian and a crazy large one that looks like it could masthead a clipper). No consistent theme to the collection so far other than to try a wide variety of sizes and shapes, filtering (and not), and jump on ones that are usable pieces of art.

The only indoors is at the local cigar bar; otherwise backyard or under cover outside

Yes, but only if doing so is reasonably unobtrusive (away from crowds where I have already set myself up rather than introducing smoke into places where people are already positioned)

~5x per week

Favorite place or setting for a good pipe smoke?-
I just seek out quiet and solace. It’s all about relaxing. Usually my own back yard is the best place assuming weather cooperates

I am getting more proficient with some experience, so less user error and more enjoyment. Not overpacking and slowing down are the two biggest points for me, and the rest is bliss. Such a great hobby and so much to learn and experience. No tongue bite for me, fortunately, but my wife’s attitude toward all tobacco is easily the biggest challenge! From reading people’s responses to this and other forum topics, it doesn’t appear that I’m alone in that regard!
