I really enjoy collecting And restoring in expensive pipes That I find in thrift shops in antique stores. I have found some great pipes and smoke most of them




Size of your pipe collection -
Well, I have restored well over 1000 pipes but I keep about 200 for my own use. Those include 15 Artisan pipes and the rest. I have gathered from various sources over the years and are relatively inexpensive.





Do you smoke your pipe indoors, outside or combination of both?-
I do smoke my pipe indoors and my family really never mentions it but if I had my choice, I would always be outside with a good pipe



Do you smoke your pipe in public-
Absolutely! Of course, I try to be considerate of others around me and always follow the law, but I don't hesitate to light a pipe in public




How often do you smoke your pipe? -
When I was working, I would usually smoke 2 to 3 bowls a day, more on weekends. Now that I'm retired I average 6 to 10 bowls a day.





Favorite place or setting for a good pipe smoke? -
Around a campfire either with my family or with other pipe, smoking buddies. I also like to sit by a fire and read a good book while smoking my pipe.





Challenges, you smoke facing a pipe? i.e. tongue bite, etc.-
Once I started drying my pipe tobacco to just south of crispy, I get next to no tongue bite.

I smoke cigars and also have a dip of snus in when I can't smoke. Yes, I'm addicted to nicotine.


What kind of pipe.. artisan, factory, or combination-
I only own factory pipes at the moment.

40ish

Outdoors or in my garage. The only time I get to smoke indoors is at my local B&M



Do you smoke your pipe in public-
Yes, I do. I've gotten many compliments and no complaints over the years. I do make sure to smoke something that smells nice when I'm in public.


How often do you smoke your pipe? -
It varies. Most days I'll smoke 2-4 bowls a day. However there are some times that I will got a few days without smoking one at all. Depends on how life is coming at me.



Favorite place or setting for a good pipe smoke?-
It varies. I love being by myself on my patio with a cup of coffee and a pipe, but I also love sitting around the table at my local shop and enjoying a pipe and good conversation.


Challenges, you smoke facing a pipe? i.e. tongue bite, etc.-
I have had issues with tongue bite. I went about 3 or 4 years smoking only burleys because my favorite Virginias burned me too bad. Thankfully I'm able to smoke them again recently without discomfort.
I tried drying them out like you mentioned, but all I got was less flavorful tobacco and still got the tongue bite.

A bit too intrusive for my comfort but, I'll give you a quick overview. I'm addicted to nicotine, four to ten bowls a day, a handful of cigars daily, etc. Cigarettes at one time and a chaw on the flight line.

No. I used to smoke cigars, but haven't in recent years.

Mostly Britwood, specifically Barlings (surprise!), some American factory pipes, like Kaywoodies, a few Scandinavian pipes, and American Artisan pipes including Scottie Piersel, Tony Fillenwarth, Lee Von Erck, Paul Tatum, and Trever Talbert.


Size of your pipe collection?-

Probably about 130+ pipes, an insane amount. The biggest concentration are Family Era Barlings, a little over 100 of them, ranging from 1882 through 1962, and a few Corporate Era Barlings as well.



Do you smoke your pipe indoors, outside or combination of both? -

I smoke outdoors only, except at a pipe show.




Do you smoke your pipe in public-

Pretty hard not to.


How often do you smoke your pipe? -

A couple of times a day. Sometimes I put it down for a couple of weeks



Favorite place or setting for a good pipe smoke?-

Front porch mostly or when walking the dog.

I still have a few cigarettes a day because of the convenience. I’m hoping when I retire 3 years from now I can use the pipe to put them down altogether.

I suppose a combination. Old Sasieni pipes and artisan mostly.

17 and one being made. I’ve had hundreds of pipes, but now I know what I like and doubt I’ll ever have more than 20.

Both.


Do you smoke your pipe in public-

Every day.

How often do you smoke your pipe? -
2 to 3 bowls on work days and 4 or 5 when I’m off.

Favorite place or setting for a good pipe smoke?-
Much of my smoking is done in the truck on the way to or home from from work, but my favorite spots are on my patio when the weather permits, and in my downstairs rec room when it doesn’t.

None, really. I was fortunate enough to start with good pipes and good tobacco. I started with English blends. I never got into aromatics, and picked up packing and smoking fairly quickly. Mac Baron blends have been the only thing to bite me, so I avoid them. Virginia and Lakeland flakes for me now, and they’ve never given me any problems.

Been smoking a pipe around 50 years. Only own factory pipes, around 70 of them. Don't smoke in public unless you count the cigars I smoke on the porch about twice a year. I smoke 4 times daily. Smoke in the comfort of our den while reading, watching TV, or listening to music.

My last reserve of straight Yenidje is running out, my jars of TS24 will likely not last the year, and Camel cigarettes still have Yenidje in them. Pipe maintenance is just too painful on my failing hands and though there are many exceptions, the RYO/cigarette crowd on the whole is just a friendlier group of folks.

Hard to say, it used to be off-and-on, but regularly for the last 3.

Cigarettes (Camel Wides Menthol). I don't regularly use it but if I'm stuck where I can't go smoke like, on an airplane or something, I'll use snuff (almost always "medicated", especially if it has camphor). Generally lean to cigarettes. I'm also not a clencher so being busy when at home, I don't have a pipe in my mouth, I always end up either smoking too fast or forgetting that it's there.

Almost all mine are factory, except my meer.

Size of your pipe collection?-
7 (5 briar, one meer, one cheap pressed/composite meer) +7 cheapo clays.

Almost exclusively outdoors unless it's too cold.

Do you smoke your pipe in public-
No. Partly don't want the attention, partly if I am in public, I'm busy and haven't the time, I don't like starting and stopping a bowl, I just stick to cigarettes in public because that's all I have time for, but "in public" means I'm usually in a building that doesn't allow smoking.

How often do you smoke your pipe? -
Not as much as I'd like, just once a day at the moment.

Favorite place or setting for a good pipe smoke?-
At home, alone, in the quiet, on my porch.

I also smoke cigarettes. I’ve never had a cigar or tried snuff.

All of my briars that get regularly smoked are filterless Savinellis with acrylic stems. I do have some other briars that were gifts that don’t get smoked frequently. All of my meerschaums are signed or branded.

Size of your pipe collection?-

I just sent in a box of 7 pipes to smokingpipes for store credit, and I now have 12 pipes in total. This is excluding cobs, which I don't smoke anymore. I’ll likely get a couple of pipes with my store credit shortly though.

Both but not everywhere in my house. I only smoke in my kitchen and part of my living area once everyone is in bed.

Yes.

How often do you smoke your pipe? -

I used to smoke 2-4 bowls a day but lately it’s only been 1-2. I have a newborn son in addition to a 5-year-old daughter. I tend to smoke more cigarettes these days but that will likely change as my son gets older.

Favorite place or setting for a good pipe smoke?-

Anywhere will do.

No challenges come to mind. I guess it would be cool if there were more public places to smoke indoors.

Other forms of tobacco ? Cigars 2002 - present. VERY occasional since 2021- just because I enjoy smoking a pipe so much more, despite having a large collection of aged cigars.
Totally intolerant of cigarettes.


What kind of pipes ? Combination of factory - Britwoods in the main, but also Petersons, Stanwells, etc. and artisans


Size of collection ? 200+


Smoking indoors or outdoors ? Strictly outdoors. Or face the wrath of Her Indoors


How often ? Weekends and days off & holidays


Favourite place or setting ? Front verandah at home mostly. Occasionally backyard patio


Smoking in public ? At home almost exclusively.
Cigars at cigar functions or at a few cigar-friendly venues - club, bars/cigar lounges with OUTDOOR seating/verandah. Venues can be undercover, but must not be totally enclosed. It is totally taboo to smoke indoors.
Australia has very strict anti-smoking laws in public spaces eg public/council parks and in indoor spaces eg restaurants or clubs.


Challenges ? Lucky NOT to experience tongue bite.
Smoking in Australia is a huge challenge - VERY expensive tobacco with limited choice in Australia.
SmokingPipes, and tobacconists in the UK and EU will NOT sell tobacco to anyone with an Aussie address
Lack of public areas or venues to enjoy a smoke
