A Jess Chonowitsch dublin or lovat; or even more remotely, a Sixten Ivarsson dublin -- he knew to make thick bowls that were smooth cool smokers. Both makers made or make pipes that are beautiful in form and outstanding in function. But both of their works are not within the realm of a responsible financial pipe choice for me. Hence, they are unicorns.

Look below at both the second and third dublins from the top; those get my piper's heart bounding and pounding :puffy:

chasing, outstanding collection of Bruce's work. Here are pics of mine, both are Rhodesians. He still has pipes for sale on his site, do you think they are available? The white ring on that second Weaver is Mastodon Ivory.
Thomas, did you click on the link in my earlier post? Best looking Dublin I have ever seen.

Likely not. That canted Dublin on his site with the hippo tooth shank accent is still listed for sale, but is the one he gave me last year. The white bands on the top three in my pic are elephant ivory.

Yep, the Comoy's 499 Extraordinaire was my holy grail.

Oddly, I rarely smoke that one, its a bit too large.
I prefer my other Grails, a pair of 9242's, a '37 9239 (which is a silver banded 9242, as near as I can tell) and a Comoy's 256

The 256 Comoy's was the last open spot on my "Holy Grail" list, so there's currently nothing out there that I'm seeking.

1985 Christmas pipe from Dunhill. The second is a morta vest pipe, I've seen one and fell for it but he wouldn't sell it.

Harris,
This is a beauty...

But your rhodesians above are very nice; I find a slight dublinesque shape in them when looking at the bowls. Beautiful pipes ... both are in fantastic condition, too!

Like all who suffer from pipe acquisition disorder, I certainly get crushes on particular pipes and feel like they are my unicorn pipes. But the real unicorns emerge from the ranks of pipes I already own, often from the most ordinary, moderately priced, when particular pipes excel in durability, smoking characteristics and charisma. All of my most valuable players are walk-ons or gifts.

Here
I think I will begin putting all of my spare change in a jug, so whenever Harris tires of that Rad Davis Dublin (the orange one that he thinks is "ugly") I can make an offer.

That's the closest I have to a unicorn, so far.

Thomas, that Jess is the most beautiful pipe I have ever seen. If I could buy it tomorrow for 5 grand I would do it in a heartbeat. I would have to sell a few pipes to finance it but I would do it.
The Weavers...I bought the one with the polished top from Mike at Briar Blues and it was mint. The other one I got from SP and it was also mint. I got good deals on both in my opinion. I am always searching ebay for more of his pipes.
Jay, sorry but that pipe smokes way too good for me to ever let it go. It also represents the first estate Rad I ever bought.

All of my Weavers, except for the billiard, came straight from the source.

My pair of unicorns are Gert Holbek's 'Polonius' and the Ib Loran that landed him second prize in the Royal Copenhagen's competition of 1971.

Not the 'mussel' painted or the gold bling painted ones, but the one in plain white.
