What shape, length for your coolest everyday pipe? I see some like 6 inch minimum but a lot of bulldogs in posts, which are normally short? Thanks

I like a good bent bulldog. I have a Sav bulldog that's 6.5-ish inches and it is still my personal favorite for combined smoking and looks.

If I had to choose only one favorite shape it would be a Dublin. I like it around 6-6.25 inches long, a group 5-6 sized bowl. They smoke my flakes extremely well.

For the longest time I was a bull bent kinda' guy.

But, over the last few years I have been opting more and more for straight classic shapes.

e.g. Canadians with some heft to them, Bulldogs, and Pokers.

Bent billiard, bent apple, bent egg are all pretty much tied for first place with me. Once in a while, a straight billard.
A few weeks ago, I saw an ad on this site for a Radice bone-colored Oom Paul, and I fell in love. I'm generally not that crazy about Oom Pauls, but this one was gorgeous! (I'm glad the merchant's website didn't actually sell that particular pipe, because it would have been way over my budget.)
And I always prefer a smooth tapered stem.

When I first even thought of smoking a pipe I thought it was silly to even consider a straight pipe bit now that's all I want and I only have one in my small rotation.

My favorite of the month is the lovat. I have two and love 'em. Both are about 5" long.

Just curious, exactly what connotations did a straight pipe have?

Hard to say, but I am always on the hunt for a Cutty or canted forward bowl.

Stanwell No. 11, and it's modern rendition, the featherweight 242. My perfect shape.
From a purely aesthetic standpoint, I also have a penchant quarter bent for Zulus. Who knows why.

If I was to exclusively collect one shape for the rest of my life, it would be any and all variations on Savinellis 320KS shape, or the Author. Not too many pipe makers make them, but they are fantastic. I am also a classic Billiard and Bulldog kind of guy. I also like a good Freehand if it is done correctly, like variations on the Danish style.

Probably the bent apple which smokes cool because of the extra briar in the rounded shape, and feels just right in the hand.

I have been smoking the Wilke on the left since 1958. The other two are Petersons.
