Ghost- If you like black metal and Alcest, you should really give Agalloch a listen.
I guess I'm late to the party but I have to second this. Marrow of the Spirit is the best, most complete, ambitious and successful metal album of the last 20 years, in my clearly-not-humble opinion.
Also, post-rock/post-metal is a must for pipe smoking. When some songs carry on as long as the pipe does, that's a good thing. Mono, Pelican, Isis, Yndi Halda, Explosions in the Sky, Russian Circles, Godspeed You! Black Emperor etc.

Anthony, if you enjoy Celtic and Lorenna McKennit, you should try the early CDs of Blackmore's Night. (Yes, the same Richie Blackmore from Deep Purple, who has returned to his roots.)

I listen to a lot of English-German metal usually: Blind Guardian or Avantasia. Both groups are worth checking out if you like metal, like the way Queen sounds and appreciate high fantasy stories. Blind Guardian has an amazing album called Nightfall in Middle Earth and the album is based entirely off of JRR Tolkien's "The Silmarillion."

Well, being a musician, I don't really listen if I don't have to. It feels like doing work. In the car (I smoke and drive) I keep Blink or AVA in the CD player. Nothing really going on changes wise so I don't spend time analyzing or anything. I play Jazz (swing to bebop mostly) and calypso, so I'll listen to that a lot.
But if I just want to chill out with a pipe, the "music" is just the soundtrack to whatever show or movie I put on!

I had forgotten to add to my list of favorite music to listen to while smoking a pipe: movie soundtracks, like the stirring and adventurous score for "Van Helsing" and Japanese monster movies. They really get the mind going.
