Erm...estate pipes? Lol.

Well to be fair, I’ve never actually purchased a new briar pipe before. So, from my estates, and excluding any crazy deals, I’d say mid century-ish civic pipes. They don’t seem to cause much fanfare when listed for sale and are quite often associated with britwood pipe houses going to shit, but the few I have I really like.

For awhile I spent 2 or 3 hundred on estates, thinking, I don't have their value new but I can buy them estate, and doing so I can get a great pipe, buying a Savinelli autograph freehand with a long, irregularly shaped bowl and a Kent Rasmussen, or some such thing.

But for the longest time I bought new or estate, whatever struck my fancy, which in the last two years became whatever was cheap and so struck my fancy.

For real low cost pleasant functionality Savinelli unfinished line and MM cobs. But, once in the $150-$250 range, a commission can be VERY pleasant, functional, and worth it... depending on the budget of course.

3 pipes : 1st from St Claude costing $35
2nd an amber-stemmed with silver band but no date-marks. It has an orific bit, and that with the Amber stem would date it to pre-1920s
3rd an Ashton (Jimmy Craig)
The French pipe despite its lowly price smokes as well as the other 2.
Good value ? I'd say so

Well they got me!!
Yeah. I had/have this thing about wanting the silver over the nickel. In reality, since I'm not a jeweler, or planning on scrapping the pipe, it shouldn't really make much difference to me. If it wasn't for the hallmarks, or just knowing a certain line has silver, I bet I couldn't even tell the difference.

I like to think of some of my up-market pipes as good values. But at the low price end, I think of the aforementioned Kaywoodie and Savinelli's Rossi, and Tsuge tasting pipes, Savinelli unfinished pipes, Ropp's vintage Etudiants, MM cob special editions with acrylic stems, and low-end Stanwell and some of the Petersons that come on sale at under 60 USD. Iwan Ries house pipes are now sourced from Genod and go for 60 USD. There are many others, but those are some good examples I know. Also, I agree that French pipes in general are well above their price point in quality, and always have notable refined design.
