I have a MM hardwood pipe, maple, that smokes well, doesn't overheat, has an open draw. I think it sells for five bucks and change. I wouldn't work too hard at fixing this one.

I don't know what you all are talking about, that really looks like briar to me. Just not the best grain. There's no way there's a synthetic material that simulates briar's grain so well with the birdseye and everything?

On the other side from where it says “Maine Pipe Smoker “it reads “Imported Briar - Italy” but who knows?

I had a pipe I had purchased that did the same thing. I liked the aesthetics but it felt "fake" (feather light weight, plastic feeling) in the hand and got hot as heck. Sent it back to the Ebay seller indicating I thought it might be brylon.

Supposedly he did a test of some kind that confirmed that it was briar (but refunded me), so I just had to presume it was a unique issue with that particular pipe.

Not all women smoke the same either...

The walls seem too thin and the pipe seems to be lacquered so the briar can't breath and cool. You'll have to make a decision on whether its worth the time to investigate and correct the issue. I had a thin walled bent brandy that did the same thing no matter what tobacco and rate of cadence. I could stand it no longer and gave it away.

Lacquer, paint, varnish, heavy wax - Have almost no effect on heat of bowl. And briar breathes very slowly in any event.

Thin walls, heat conduction of that particular bit of briar- or whatever materiel- are what makes the bowl hot.
