These are consigned tins where the seller sets the price he wants and 4Noggins marks it up for their cut. Many of the buyers are from China where sharing a unicorn like this with friends is considered a social event and a great pleasure. And the buyer could very well turn it around for even more $$. One B&M I've bought from sells to a Chinese broker all the Esoterica that it doesn't immediately sell to its customers. I've also corresponded with people who have deals to buy a B&M's entire shipment, to then sell it to an agent. It's the sort of free market.

One could spend this much on dinner at Ruth's Chris and it still ends up going down the sewer the next day.

We in the US have gotten used to extremely low prices, much lower than people pay in other countries. People in other countries are happy to get a tin of a celebrated blend for not much more than they pay for regular retail.

As Duane said earlier, you can find any Esoterica blend for "normal" retail if you're willing to make the effort. I've cellared about 36 lbs of the blends that I liked without paying scalpers prices.

Some people will spend $300 for a box (20) of good cigars
Some will pay even more.... ?

The Most Expensive Cigars in The World - https://www.luxxu.net/blog/the-most-expensive-cigars-in-the-world/

I like the bit about the people who roll the million Dollar Gurkha Royal Courtesan Cigars.
"Each cigar is infused with Remy Martin’s Black Pearl Louis XIII (165,000$ per bottle), the rolls use ultra-rare stuffing from the Himalayas, and, to ensure the highest quality possible, the master rollers are blindfolded, focusing solely on their art."

At that price I hope there's no peeking from behind the blindfold.

If theres a hungry market looking to snap off these blends within minutes of being posted then you should charge accordingly. Nobody is getting ripped off. The buyer gets what he wants and so does the seller. Ive seen bags of Penzance sell for $650 on 4noggins.

I’d be lying if I said I’ve never paid above retail for a blend I desired. That was early before I laid the networking groundwork that is required to attain sought after blends. Calls & homework, B&M patronage where you could otherwise go without, building relationships in the forums, overseas partners, etc.

If a guy can get 150$ for a tin of tobacco then I say have at it hoss. I’ve found that rarely ever is the extra premium paid on a tin worth the trouble IMHO. (However, I still might pay a bit extra for a tin of Edgeworth Slices.) ? You don’t have to like it, but you also don’t have to buy it either. ?☕

I won't buy Penzance anymore, but yes on Pembroke and Dunbar at less than $20/ tin and bags for $36.

I won't pay more than $5/ounce for tobacco and have a lot of "online unicorns". If folks took the time to call B&Ms, they'll find unicorns to be as mythical as the fairy tales.

Oh, is Esoterica shipping 4oz tins now? ?

There's a sucker born every minute. A fool and his money are soon to part. I say that but if someone has never smoked McClelland and wants to worse than anything, $150 may not be a horrible price to pay. It's a matter of your perspective.
A free market economy. People will charge what people will pay.

100% guess I'm just shocked people out here paying $120 for 50g of Blackwoods Flake or something, like seriously?

@lukasstrifeson

Those are jacked up 4Noggins prices, with no disrespect to anyone, no one should support that business! ?

Making money and ripping off people are two very different things!

Steve @ Pipestud’s all the way! ?

What's "ripping people off" though? At the height of the Chinese obsession with Esoterica, they were going for $350/400 a bag. Like the gents previously said, free market and all that...

That's a really good point you make here. Being in the US and with the ability to order online, I often forget about taxes and all that. Fair enough, we have been getting away with murder on this $8.00 50g tins.

I guess my original point got lost someone along the lines, but really I was just shocked that someone would pay so much for a recent release. Honestly, I'm a sucker for older Virginias, I'd definitely cough up $100 for a nice tin of pre-2010 Christmas Cheer or Blackwoods Flake, but people reselling "current releases" kind of rubs me the wrong way. Guess I came in this thread peeved and "ready rubbed" LOL.

I've dropped $150 on a single meal out with my wife. If I really wanted it, $150 would be no big deal. But, I realize that to some folks $150 would mean the difference between keeping the lights on or food on the table.
It always surprises me when folks complain about prices of things. But, I guess it is the nature with such a diverse group getting into the pipe hobby.

But, if this type of thing entertains you, look at the wine market. Sure, you can pick up a bottle of Ménage à Trois or Barefoot wine at the grocery store for $10 a bottle, but you can also sample something from a rare Chilean vinery for $500+, add in something with age on the bottle, and you could be up against folks willing to throw $1200+ at it. My favorite sommelier in town sells $1200 bottles of wine by the case at a time. And, truck loads of $500 bottles at a time. $150 for a whole tin isn't as ridiculous in that perspective.

And on that I agree with you, I will smoke near any pipe tobacco that comes my way and I’ll be damn happy with/about it as well. For reference, one of my favorites is PA, so obviously, I’m no elitist.
I like several of the D&R blends that remain and think they are a bargain. And a pinch of Dark Birds Eye can wake up anything bland.

This is for real and not parody or satire? The only market I can imagine for any of this could only be the the incredibly wealthy retarded spawn of generations of incest.
