What Is With All the Links To Threads Instead Of Answers?

When I joined this forum 2 years ago, I was a new pipe smoker. I was asking lots of stupid questions all the time, making mistakes (I still ask), etc. and every single time my questions have been answered with a great patience.
A "Good 0l' Boy" crowd is the feeling I get. You see, you are forcing yourself to receive some kind of feeling from an online source. Why?
And people wonder why some of the best guys have left here? Who left here? What's happened since they've left? Did the sun rise from the West? Did the forum collapse? Did Kevin file a bankruptcy? I am really amazed how some people take some things seriously.
OK now here's your open invitation boys to attack me and make me look like a fool. It's what this place is very good at. If someone attacks you, I will be there as a Mod, even if you look like a fool. This place is very good at lots of positive things, you just have to see it.
I found no evidence of the 'old boy' issue. I am as ignorant as anyone can be about lots of things, but snobby is NOT this place. I felt (a feeling from a forum...) welcomed from day one. But, I won't post a link to it...
Hmm. I have to agree with cigrmaster. If the trend of members posting links instead of answers accelerates, then this place will eventually wither away and die. Seen it happen to other boards. The less the activity, the less people will visit. Nothing kills a question thread quicker than a link instead of an answer. :?
I know it can be a pain in the ass to answer the same questions for the 10,000th time, or talk about the same old topics over and over and over, but that is what keeps this place alive and kicking.

Please show me where new members are getting links instead of answers, and please substantiate the claim that it's becoming a "trend". I just don't see it.
I'll take issue with that. What keeps this place alive and kicking are the sponsors. What keeps it active is the minority of long-time participants who make the majority of posts. What keeps it interesting are the new members who always question dogma and established common knowledge. Many a newbie has forced the old guard to reconsider things when they find that they can't quite explain it!
Well-said, kola. I have to agree. It is only a handful of crusty old members here that occasionally post rude/childish responses for attention, or gang up on members they don't agree with. And when someone calls one of them out, the rest come running to defend him. Most members (and all the mods) here are great, but there are a handful of self-righteous, condescending, holier-than-thou old-timers that team up and troll for attention or to shut up another member- and they usually get away with it. Kind of ruins it for the rest of us.
I don't really feel like searching through the forums for specific threads. It would be easier just to name the couple of names (everyone already knows who they are), but I know that's not appropriate.
Let's just say that it's done in a way so as to not break the board rules too much and draw attention.
But on a positive note, this thread has been surprisingly civilized.

linger in obscurity? Aren't you abetting them by protecting them? I say name names, these folks have earned some recognition. More importantly doing so may help protect some naif from some sort of on-line depredation.
Now, now, don't gang up on the poor guy. Play nice. Okay, time for me to go pull the wings off of some flies.
