I think I finally figured out a take on this one. An age long mystery for me ... A too large of a bowl is a bowl for which you have to improvise a tamper, as the ones that can be bought, with regular shapes and lengths, can no longer do the job as your reach the heel of the bowl. What is your take on this ?

No such thing. Many of my figural tampers and Laguiole knife can accommodate chambers with a 5 inch depth.
I have a tiroliche that is so deep that I am afraid I can hardly cling to anything when spooning the ceramic bowl. While tobacco gets very adhesive on the heel of thar pipe, I fear too much pressure will break the thing. I have some haunting memories with a clay pipe ..

I've got a meerschaum nearly 4 inches deep and haven't had any issues. Just don't compact when tamping, only use enough pressure to press the ashes down.

Serious answer:

A PipeWorld famous guy who has been collecting pipes for over 40 years, specializes in large-sized ones, and smokes nothing else---Rich Esserman---says the maximum chamber depth for good smoking is 3", and the maximum diameter .95"--1.0"

Larger and deeper chambers CAN be smoked, but more in "name only"... meaning the hassles involved with doing it aren't worth the extra bother.
