What is a hipster?

Hipsterism is a state of mind that combines ironism, fatalism and narcissism.
You may have a beard and not be a hipster, but a product that uses marketing in the same shallow way that hipsters adopt beards might be said to be "beard-inspired."

Form your own opinions. Then compare to this mentality (NSFW but politics not porn) and consider what kind of mental state produces a hipster, and you may see why they are distrusted. As far as hipster, if the end of western civilization is their goal, they just might be successful. Without going back too far, we've had our hippies, the leather jacket and DA crowd, the Urban Cowboy crowd, Elvis was supposed to be the beginning of the end. To call the post-WWII era the start of the problem is to ignore the Zoot Suit culture, those crazy kids and their weird dances of the 20s and 30s, etc.
Every generation comes up with new ways to irritate the older ones. But, the latest target is always surprised to now find themselves, OMG!, the older generation and now a suitable target for the their kids.
In the succinct words from the above, "Who cares!"
It's an interesting generational phenomenon, fun to watch and skewer.

According to this definition, you would have to know the individual personally to know whether or not they are a hipster. I mean, how could you possibly know if a person is smoking a pipe for attention just by looking at them?

because you will know, I have met some, a good example would be some one who inhales deep the smoke, does not tamp and its smoking big plums of exaggerated smoke at gatherings to call his attention, and he giving you advice to get the cheap cigarette roll your own tobacco to pack in the pipe, just look at their face, they look bitter, twisted they look like they drank bitter beer, you can tell that they are suffering and that they are not enjoying the tobacco, same thing with the hipsters that smoke e-cigs and they tweak it to produce major, ridiculous amount of smoke just to show off.

perdurabo no it does not make you a hipster, it means that that's you favorite tobacco,a real pipe smoker will have a collection of some sort whether its tiny or large, and we tend to go to arms length to try and gather the best tobaccos out there, even the ones that are new to this great hobby will invest money to get the right pipes to smoke and look for other pipe smokers advice and ask in how to smoke properly and which tobaccos to start with, hipsters just want to look different and cool and will just pick up any pipe and smoke with abandon, they are doing it just for the looks.
