Yeh, the first place I ever heard the term "hipster" was on here. But, I think what you get in this thread is a mix-mash of theoretical hipster-ism, young people who just dress differently, and old guys worried that people will think that they are a communist because they have beards.
I believe Kevin had put his foot down on threads like this, saying everyone was welcome in this community. I guess things have relaxed a bit.
My area of the world just doesn't have a lot hipsters, but after reading this stuff starting back about a year ago or so on here, I started noticing a few people here and there in my area. But, these are just kids looking different. I do not believe for one second that these people are started by some philosophical or political motive. In fact, as an old bearded guy with hats, I think we should be honored to be emulated. At the pipe show in New Orleans, I saw more of a hipster culture there, especially at the show. Most of the very pipemakers that we honor in the forum fit the hipster bill to a tee. So make fun of hipsters, but then turn around and honor their work, how retarded is that? Then we have a few pipe shop owners that seem to be hipsterish. And, if you removed all of the hipsters that were laying down big rolls of cash at the pipe show, you'd be left with the handful of geriatric customers like me with most on fixed incomes. New Orleans was also when I realized that most of the folks on here are most likely in the hipster camp. So, making fun of hipsters is making fun of the very people that you guys all interact with every day. Making fun of hipsters makes fun of many of the pipe makers, pipe shop owners and so on and so on. Thus, making fun of hipsters is just stupid.
Yeh, I know, my moniker has been "thank you for choosing not to get offended by something." But, I am really not offended, just being practical. If we are going to have a community, you don't piss on your neighbors (even if they do live a mile down the road, sheesh). And, if you want to see the pipe industry grow, you encourage these young men that are making our pipes and running the pipe shops.
It's not about PC, it's about Not being stupid. Just my 2 cents.
