If I don't get nicotine I get grumpy and surly and hate all of humanity because everything annoys me. I don't feel sick or tired. Just horrible emotionally and mentally. I try not to go too long with out some form of nicotine. What's nice is since I haven't smoked cigs my lungs don't really react to lack of nicotine in any noticeable way. After I quit the cancer sticks I still remember being forced to run for a bus catching it and only being out of breath instead of feeling like I had breathed fire.

I don’t notice the absence of nicotine. I do notice that if circumstances dictate a few days without smoking, I REALLY experience flavor and nuances when I get back. For me, a break every so often enhances my enjoyment. I’m usually a two or three bowls a day smoker. More than that, everything starts to taste the same. Everyone is different.

When I've been a week or two, maybe a month without smoking, for whatever reason, I come back with more desire, because I miss it. I imagine that the body, so to speak, rests, or is stronger. But I have noticed that my wife's plants that are in my smoking room always end up dying. My wife replaces new pots, and the window is also slightly open. I have told my wife not to put plants, that it would be better to give me bottles of whisky.

I typically smoke 4 or 5 bowls a week and smoke 2 or 3 cigars a week. I am a little over a month into a break from all tobacco and I have also been alcohol free for the same time period. I've really felt no physical difference. From what I was told to expect, I was expecting an increase in energy, better sleep, etc. I've had none of that. I thought I might lose some weight, but weight has not changed either.

The mental aspect has been the most challenging aspect for me. I found it amazing how much my brain is wrapped around alcohol and tobacco. I get home from work and automatically head to the beer fridge. We see a lovely 45 degree sunny day and think it's a perfect opportunity to get out and smoke at lunch, or it may be a great night for a fire pit and a cigar. I have really missed my whisky/whiskey night-cap too.

Nicotine is not bad for you and is not any different than caffeine. I don't smoke enough to get a dependency, but I do use the nicotine pouches sometimes at work when I have to get the mind raging and concentrate. It helps with my focus. I go months at a time without pipes often and other times I am able to enjoy them for weeks at a time. For someone who goes long stretches of pipe use and then shuts it down totally, I recommend just getting a pack of 2 to 4 mg pouches and pop one in when you get any sort of symptoms then wean yourself down to 1 a day and then none. Your friends and family will thank you.

I'm an old retired guy. I enjoy the pipe experience. My father and priest both smoked pipes. I have a number of very nice pipes, all of them are 20+ years old and smoke well. After a bout with cancer several years ago (not smoke related), I have been reluctant to start back with the pipes. They are stored on a bookshelf and well taken care of. One of these days when the weather is nice...

PS. I sure miss Pipes Magazine
