Very interesting question. I honestly could not be satisfied with either one pipe or one tobacco. I am very happy with what many would consider a modest collection of 36 pipes and a cellar of only 28 different blends. For the sake of this arguement though, if I had one Rad Davis pipe and unlimited tobacco, I could survive. The thought of being limited to one flavor day after day, year after year is abhorrent to me. That would be like eating steak every day and while I love a good steak, eating it every day would awful.

Not really able to answer. I would be fine if someone told me I could only have McConnell Oriental and infinite pipes, I would be happy. If I was only able to keep my Rinaldo bulldog but have the full slate of produced blends i would also be happy.
As it stands now, I like quality pipes and quality tobacco pretty equally. Life is too short to fit your piping into a budget. Of course, my pipe non-budget is why I'm driving a 15 year old Suburban with 300k on the odometer.

That is too freaking funny. So I guess my eating turkey sandwiches night after night would fit into your system of budgeting?

This is a hard one as I'm still fairly green and in awe of both sides of the coin. I would have to go with a single pipe and infinite blends however.... at this juncture in time at least.
I am often conflicted by wanting to smoke a specific pipe and enjoy its tactile offerings while, simultaneously, wanting to smoke a tobacco that doesn't do specifically well in that particular pipe!
Matters are complicated further by the fact that I don't smoke very often and that I'm really trying to 'properly break in' (if there is such a thing) my two newest and most enjoyed/best smoking pipes; I am only smoking straight VA's in them at the moment but have been exploring VaPers and some new English blends in lesser-enjoyed pipes.
Life is tough... ;)

I love to collect and browse pipes online. I love trying and reading about tobacco. I just ordered a bunch of blends I never tried (new to this pipe religion, as a member referred pipe smoking to). I love the art that goes into the making of pipes (blows me away), but I say the same regarding tobacco blends.

One pipe and infinite blends.

Of course, I could be happy with one pipe and one blend also.

Tobacco for the same reason that many have stated, without the tobacco, it don't matter how many pipes you have.

I would certainly say tobacco over pipes. W/o tobacco, we'd all just be buying pricey wood carvings!!
EDIT: Just saw the question in this thread.
I would certainly say infinite pipes, one blend. I have a personal favorite blend from my B&M called Lancaster, a wonderful blend with caramel and coffee notes. I could smoke it all day, every day! :D

I almost already do one pipe and multi blends. 99% of the time I use one of my dozen Cob Spools ("one" pipe) with one of the 14 blends currently in rotation.

Tough question. I love my varieties of pipe, but equally love my standard tobaccos. The two fuse into one.

For a long time it was tobacco; I loved to cellar. Now it's both, but I am making a mighty effort toward pipe restraint. To me cobs smoke as well as a Ferndown at 1% of the price, but I won't deny that the Ferndown is a far more beautiful object. My buying horizon right now is lit by only 15 Missouri Meerschaum Mark Twains.

Easy... MONEY. Then I could afford to purchase an endless multitude of both pipes and tobacco like peckinpahhombre that I'll more likely than not ever get to use. Then again, even if I had the finances to do both I'd never do so as having a shit load of pipes and tobacco has never been of any concern to me. I'm a happy camper with what I have. Keep it simple, life is too short as to put a value on purchasing more pipes or tobacco.
