If I had infinite tobacco and no pipe, I could make one however poorly. If I had a pipe and no tobacco, I would be hard pressed to be able to grow and blend a decent English left to my own devices. So in the purest form, I suppose the tobacco is of more significance to me. Damn do I love a good looking and smoking pipe though.

For me no question, the tobacco. Now I have about 20 pipes and a commission in the works and more to come, but tobacco is not going to get any cheaper, so I am stocking up.

What a horrible scenario! I hope it never comes to that but if I had to choose it would be one good pipe and lots of tobacco. :puffy:

Can't have one without the other I would say a pipe. My reasoning is you ever see that twilight zone where the guy just wants alone time to read. Well he becomes the last person alive on earth and finds himself surrounded by books only to accidentally break his glasses. Basically same concept you could have all the pipe tobacco in the world but without a pipe it's useless. Edit read that wrong the one pipe with the blends.

Hrm... given the misspent days of my youth, I can say anything can be used for a smoking vessel, so I would go with the baccy.

I smoke pretty much just one blend, but that is the important part of my pipe smoking, and any pipe I have could be used to burn that tobacco, so I am a one blend, one pipe kind of person. I don't really need hundreds of high end pipes when I can get a satisfying smoke from an inexpensive corn cob.

I think most of us could suffer through with one of each or one of one and multiples of the other, but this question was rather loaded.

I think the odds of me producing my own quality tobacco blends are greater than those of me producing an acceptable pipe.

Once I had a pipe...it's pretty much downhill. Wheee!

Let me taste what you've made for me! Burley,VA, Latakia,Cavendish,Perique,Oriental, in all their various presentations.

Tobacco...Went through the infinite pipe quest a few years back and it didn't work out so well. Going for the infinite tobacco now and it's working out beautifully.

As an amature pipe collector, smoking is secondary to me. I'm more interested in the objects and the history and culture they came from. Tobacco is certainly part of that interest but I think compared to most people here I smoke them not very often.

It all depends on how I feel at the time. Nevertheless, I'm more inclined to feel like buying tobacco; it's the cheaper of my two urges.

Well, there is the idea that a pipe is an investment that will hold its value and or increase it so that you allow yourself to acquire them thinking, I can always cash in.

When you invest in tobacco it's intended to go up in smoke.

Pipe collectors are not the same as tobacco enthusiasts. Their objective is art and ownership of it.

A pipe smoker on the other hand, is more apt to be considered a starving artist.

The collector does not exist w/o the artist.

Newbroom, for me it's not exactly about art or an object holding its value. It's more of a snap shot in time or a nostalgia thing or a symbol of an era. I suppose there is a bit of "art" involved, though, as the design is representative of the time.
Mid-century modern houses are sort of the "in thing" now. My house was built in 1949 and for me, pipes from that period are of similar interest. The Jet Streams, LHS, and Dr Grabow pipes are a product of that era and well represented in my collection.

You're referring to what's called 'touchstones', perhaps? Interesting story, Touchstone is a Shakespearean character, I just found out by reading:

Easy question to answer. One pipe infinite blends. I've always had a TAD problem. I could be fine with just one pipe. 500 pipes and no tobacco is just firewood.

I have only been smoking a pipe for not quite a year. One of pipe smoking's biggest draws to me is the bounty of wonderful blends.

I was thinking about that again today. I worry that I'll lose interest in pipes as I become more and more familiar with pipe tobacco.

Once I 'found' pipe smoking, it almost..made it a guilt free access to my lady, honestly, the prime motive in my exploration, initially.

I may one day think to myself, self, you're still on a merry go round that ends in tragedy and waste, only this one takes a lot longer to go around.

I was raised to feel guilty.
