@davet, shame on me. My search for 'job' and 'work' turned up little. I should have realized there would be no use of such plebeian words here, and thusly, in my ignorance, I did not find the 'occupation' thread.
To all those who responded, facetiously or not, thanks for not rubbing my ignorance in.

"Plebeian words", man.... maybe people here don't want to talk about work and aren't obligated to divulge personal information just because they were asked. This place is devoted to pipes and tobacco, right? Also, maybe they worked hard for those "(frankly) absurdly large/expensive purchases posted here", or maybe it was given to them, you're upset they won't reveal their taxes?

Absurd purchases are relative. I probably spend more than I should on this hobby, yet I eat out maybe 2-3 times a month, drive my car until it's not worth keeping and am typing this on a 4 year old phone. This is my outlet. You'll find "absurd" to you purchases on every specialty forum--cars,cooking,watches...It's all good as long as at the end of the day you live within your means.

No worries, mon'slog... you actually started a fun thread. I'm getting a kick out of all the responses.
As for me, I sell pipes and tobaccos for a living, make a dollar a year (in a good year), and do occasionally inhale.

@theloniousmonkfish, I'm far from upset at anyone, absurd in this usage would refer to 'out of the realms of my imagination' and was not a negative statement at all, but intended as an adjective to express my awe and respect.
I don't want to have anyone 'reveal their taxes', just interested in what people who share my interests do.
It's the general discussion forum, so I thought this would be the appropriate place to talk about thing other than pipes and tobacco.
Plebeian was a jest at my own inadequacy at finding prior threads.
I enjoyed the responses posted, but if you'd direct me on how to delete the thread, I would be happy to, to avoid causing further discomfort to you and anyone else who interpreted my inquiry in a negative light.
I admire what everyone shares here, and aspire to have something respectable to contribute as well.
Now that I've explained myself, it's probably best I log out and go back to lurking for a while until I get a better grasp of the community.
Sorry again to anyone who perceived this negatively.

The problem with text conversations is that there are no vocal inflections to express intent. No offense taken here, thought it was fun.

It doesn't bother me in the least, to be honest, whether I was a flipping burgers at McDonalds or if I was owner of a multi-billion dollar company. My current employment title is master mustache shaping and curling technician of Duane's (chasingembers) mustache. He pays me a tin of Black Frigate a week to keep his mustache sexy and suave to help him get the ladies and to keep his mustache out of his clam chowder.... because everyone wants a mustache loving lady and nobody wants clam chowder in their mustache.... or mustache in their clam chowder.
Actually, though, I'm a meat cutter for a major grocery store.

Yeah, embers is right, you can't see these faces or hear the voices that come with them. We're on the internet, man, anyone could be here.... And no offense was taken. Can't see a need to apologize, man

I get that you wish to become better acquainted with the members. But, if you feel the need to ask forgiveness you should probably sit back before hitting send and read the post from a distance. This is very similar to posts which begin "I don't wish to offend... " Of course the poster wishes to offend. The inclusion of your salary led me to believe you expected to see such in responses.
There's no reason to pull back, just learn from this and keep participating. Most everyone here has a post/response or two they wish they'd reread, edited or simply not posted. You're feet are wet now so, no sense leaving the pond.

Warren sums up pretty well what initially irked me. The phrasing and inclusion of your salary made it feel like you were trying to dig deeper than you may have intended.
