As for absurdly large purchases, I budget a set amount of money immediately available for yearly pipe and tobacco purchases. Once that is exhausted, no more purchases until the following year. Out of this, I usually get one commissioned pipe, four or five other pipes, often estates, and ten to fifteen pounds of tobacco.

I participate in an experimental retirement insurance collection program that I've been involved with for over 50 years.

An integral function is to help to support a wide variety of health professionals.

I am a fire investigator. I work for insurance companies and who ever will pay the freight. I see death and destruction when I go to work.
My pipes and baccy are my release, that and good whiskey.
As for "absurdly large" purchases. Those are relative. I don't own a pet Emu farm or have a Theme park in my backyard, so my purchases are what they are.

I'm a commercial bee keeper (apiarist), can you tell? lol
After a day of getting sticky and stung a pipe under a shady tree is a good way to take the mind off the negative

I am a lab assistant for a mad scientist. My duties consist of mixing foul alchemical potions, maintaining odd, obscure machinery and devices, and the occasional grave robbing.

Don't stare at my hump!

I'm adamant on the dignity of work. I think comedians who make fun of fast food workers, for example, deserve to be fined and sentenced to work in fast food at entry level for six months. I always look those folks, fast food workers, in the eyes and thank them, sincerely, if they do a good job for me, and treat wait staff in restaurants with consideration and tip them appropriately (as tipping is the custom where I am). I've done some less prestigious work in my time, and even some prestigious work that was not in favor at the time. There are a few honored professions in many cultures -- doctor, lawyer, teacher, a few others. Everyone else is expected to explain and apologize or justify. Very wrong. All honest work is honorable and should be actively respected and supported. This should be impressed upon children and reinforced with adults. End of sermon.

Preach on, brother. I couldn't agree with you more, especially the part about being impressed upon children. Nothing I hate more in parents than the attitude that any type of work is too "menial" for their precious little brats. There was a time in this country when much of the seasonal agricultural labor was done by young people earning money for themselves, or even to help out the family. Boy, is that long-gone.
