They are useful, yes, they are ......... But in my opinion it is a pretty poor language. I would rather send / receive a comment instead of an icon. With some frequency it is not clear to me if the other party understood what I wanted to say and vice versa. It is the language of Facebook, there it's OK. I use them frequently due to my language limitations.
Have a beautiful day :col:

Maybe a little foolish for many, but here it is:
What do the symbols "LIKES" mean to you in our threads?
What is the idea behind?
Do you use them ?
What do you want to express?:
Let him know that you've read?,
That you share their tastes / opinions?
Are you trying to encourage?
Do you want to express empathy?
Is it useful to you in some way?
Anything from "I agree" to "thanks for your input, even tho my opinion differs"

If you are on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, the "like" function has become very important. So, adding that to a forum (old school) is a way to bridge that gap. It's likely new users would find it odd if that function wasn't present.

They're needed because after seeing you've been notified that a thread/discussion you're following has additional comments there's nothing worse than returning to catch up on the chat... only to find nothing more than a bunch of useless 'agree' 'this' or '+1' comments

They make any forum less irritating to use

Well put. I hope the +1ers, the agreers, etc. will see this and take heed.

I tend to use the like as an indicator that i have read the post or noted the input to the thread even if i might disagree on a personal taste level.

But i do think we need new choices, i think the dead horse icon would be great, i would also like to see a middle finger up rather than a thumb.

Shouldnt be a big deal, that finger is just two digits over from the thumb :)
