Black Doves on Netflix, 3.5/5.
Well-made, plenty of jokes and plenty of gore. My issues with it were that it does that thing which builds this supposedly “bigger than we are” story, with WW3 potential and then winds it down clumsily and abruptly. For masterclass English unwinding of complex stories nobody did it better than Guy Ritchie in Lock Stock and Snatch, and The Bank Job (dunno the director).
Somehow I thought nowadays series/films fail to generate tension and suspense, and this one is guilty: things are supposed to be super scary for our heroes but somehow you’re not worried.
Lack of realism too: firing grenade launchers at mobsters in London? Infiltrating and stealing things from the US embassy? Two people walking into a den of mobsters expecting them and shooting everyone? Police nowhere to be found? Global crime syndicate boss with zero protection? CIA and Chinese agents shooting it out cowboy style in the middle of London? Give me a break!
It is enjoyable though.
