I'm watching King Solomon's Mines, the miniseries starring Patrick Swayze as Allan Quatermain. Quite a bit of pipe smoking in this. I actually have never seen this, but I'm enjoying it so far. It's on Prime if anyone's interested.

Watching Rogue Heroes on our local SBS network. It's about the formation of the British SAS in the Second World War, how they came to be and some of their exploits and characters. I'm sure some poetic license is being taken but most of it is based around factual information and so far is a really good watch. 4.5/5 for this one so far.

Gold and Greed, The Hunt for Fenn's Treasure on Netflix. 4.5 out of 5

So much crazy. I binged all 3 eps last night. I could stop laughing about the Wyoming family. So earnest, so clueless, such pure souls.

Game of Thrones. I never watched it when it originally aired. 3 seasons in.

It’s hard to know how to rate it. It’d depend on what matters most to a person, writing, production design, performance, plain old entertainment value.

I’ll give it a 4/5 so far.

I've been binge watching ER, which I missed watching during its 15 year run do to year after year of an insane work schedule. It's pretty good, and a pleasure to see some familiar stars of yesteryear, like Red Buttons, making guest appearances.

No trope is missed, but I don't care.

I've been recording episodes, we watched them all live, but not since.

Black Doves on Netflix, 3.5/5.

Well-made, plenty of jokes and plenty of gore. My issues with it were that it does that thing which builds this supposedly “bigger than we are” story, with WW3 potential and then winds it down clumsily and abruptly. For masterclass English unwinding of complex stories nobody did it better than Guy Ritchie in Lock Stock and Snatch, and The Bank Job (dunno the director).

Somehow I thought nowadays series/films fail to generate tension and suspense, and this one is guilty: things are supposed to be super scary for our heroes but somehow you’re not worried.

Lack of realism too: firing grenade launchers at mobsters in London? Infiltrating and stealing things from the US embassy? Two people walking into a den of mobsters expecting them and shooting everyone? Police nowhere to be found? Global crime syndicate boss with zero protection? CIA and Chinese agents shooting it out cowboy style in the middle of London? Give me a break!

It is enjoyable though.

The books are fabulously entertaining! Looking forward to the series... I'll give the trailer 4/5 with optimistic expectations (yeah, i'm used to being disappointed, but still, ever an optimist!)

Speed Racer 2008. 5/5 50/5. 500/5! I love this movie!!
So. I grew up with the OG Speed Racer cartoon as my afternoon delight. That, and Johny Quest, were my favs. When the 2008 Speed Racer movie came out, i watched it, loved it, bought it, and have enjoyed it many times since. This movie brings me to unstoppable tears of joy at the end, every time! I have been a full-throated advocate of it from day one. My son, who also enjoys the movie (but perhaps not to the same degree, i mean, how could he?) sent this critic's review to me, suggesting I would enjoy it. Boy howdy, did I ever! This is also a 5/5. See the original on YT. See the movie. And see this review "The Most Important Movie of the 21st Century":
