Tobacco Review: Some Notes on Dan Tobacco's 50th Year Jubilee Tobacco:

As I promised, I'd present a review of this tobacco I recently purchased. This review will consist of two parts, an introduction today and the review tomorrow. I don't know if any of you are familiar with this vintage offering, but I suspect there are a few that are, so I'm going to add my observations to what you already know

I'd never heard of it, and when it showed up at the Reserve Store I frequent for $41.00 Canadian per tin, I bought one on spec. It arrived about four days later, and after putting it in a test pipe, my recently aquired Peterson Tavern Pipe, (my go-to and favourite company pipe) I immediately went back and ordered another tin. Then the fun began. I loaded up a bowlful, and frankly, I was blown away. Below the picture of this august pipe and tobacco, is an old promo profile I found and downloaded for your perusal. I'm going to keep this introduction short, and continue tomorrow, leaving you with what I feel a lot of you will find quite fascinating.

Now, if that profile reminds you somewhat of "Mad Fiddler," you'll be exactly right. I've not found any tobacco that tastes so similar to MF, at least not in my experience. Thus began a 4 day adventure that is not only interesting, but for me, the answer to many prayers and wishes. I've got other photos and data to assemble so I'll continue tomorrow. 🤓

Now smoking Wilke No. 72 in a pre-1974 dark brown straight Larus & Brother Co. Signature billiard with a nickel band and a tapered black vulcanite stem with the initials LCR on the top of the stem. This blend was smoked by Walter Cronkite. The ferals ate well. Daisy the Feral Princess and Tomato the Brave went out right away. Harry the Hairy just came in to eat. Norton the Nosey is snoozin'. Getting ready to clean a few pipes.

Enjoyed light low calorie snacking, and am smoking 2023 KBV Verge Engine Santa Drive in a 1978 Peterson Deluxe 20S medium bend smooth dark brown billiard with a silver cap military mount black vulcanite saddle p-lip stem. Norton the Nosey is by my feet. Sleepy Suzy is by my side. Molly Danger is snoozin' on m'lady's chair. Think I'll enjoy some quiet reading time.

Now smoking Watch City Jim’s Golden Ticket in a 2020 straight smooth dark brown Chacom 213 Bayard Opera Made in Saint Claude France with a tapered black vulcanite stem. I wish I could get a decent photo of Norton the Nosey by my feet, but the light isn't good enough to do so. His paws are curled up and he's snoozin' with a big smile on his face.

Enjoyed a tasty Snap Dragon apple, and am now smoking Wilke No. 515 in a smooth dark medium bend 2021 Peterson Heritage Brown POTY 4AB No. 45/500 military mount with a silver cap and a tapered black vulcanite AB stem. This was the original 515 that Basil Rathbone smoked, and the model that he smoked it in.

Tomato the Brave came in to eat early, so he just had dry food. After that, he came up to me and stared at Norton the Nosey, who has been by my feet for quite a while. Then Tomato stared at me, again at Norton, and at me again. I figured he wanted his wet food early, but I decided to have a little fun with him, and played with the rope. I wish I could have gotten a photo of when Tomato was on his back trying to grab the rope with teeth, and bit his leg instead. He kept on playing like it didn’t happen, but he did take a look at me when I was laughing at him. After I post this smoke, I’ll give him wet food.
