Gold Rush is excellent. @anotherbob and I both sing high praises for it, and often. It's just a really flavorful, enjoyable loose cut VA. The other thing I love about it is how well-behaved it is in the bowl, especially for a VA. The whole Ashton blend line is super affordable. Highly recommend this one, definitely crack that tin and give 'er a go! Great on a warm day with a beer.

Edit: ~20 mins. of dry time is essential, FYI.
Awesome, thanks.

Some SG Brown No. 4 in a drying bowl, for later. I've just smoked a bowl of their Black XX, and I have to say it knocks the GH twists into a cocked hat. It had great taste without the cloying sweetness of Black Irish. It was also as strong as the Brown Irish, so I'm wondering just how strong this Brown No. 4 is going to be.View attachment 107187

I rather enjoyed it, neither it nor the Black XX were anything like I expected. They're very different from the GH offerings. The brown was very mellow, only slightly spicy. It had a distinct burley undertone, I couldn't tell it was Kentucky. I did spot the cigar leaf. I did smoke it before reading any reviews, or knowing what was in it.

@weezell Looks like your taking after me with the hat and the clay pipe:)
I think Gawith tobacco is very well suited to clay pipes; I celebrated Bonfire Night with some Newminster in a clay. Going to smoke another clay bowl before going to bed!

yeah it's a great one. It's an aromatic but in a way where it really compliments the natural qualities of the tobacco and brings them out. It's like adding sugar to tea. It doesn't make the tea taste like something else just sweeter and brings out more flavor instead of covering it up. Really enjoyable blend and quite easy to smoke through a tin of it.

With about five minutes of Guy Fawkes night (5th November 1605) remaining I thought it would be an idea to post a pic of a typical c.1600-1610 pipe.
This example with mid-late 1800s brass ferrule and horn stem added to the portion ...

... alongside three example from c.1570-1590 showing the original tiny bowl sizes of the first clay pipes that were made in the UK ...

... compared to the more generous bowl size of c.1620-1640 which reflected the considerable easing of the price of tobacco
