What did the pipe smoker smoke back in the day if he/she lived in intemperate climes?
Maybe something like this:-
Mid 20th cent HURRICANE PIPE DE LUXE / BRIT. PAT. 404814 Rd. 787372 / NUTT PRODUCTS Ltd. / MADE IN LONDON ENG. / HAND CUT stem
+ Samuel Gawith WESTMORLAND MIXTURE:-

... and a similar design invented by Frederick Hudes and sold by Fortnum & Mason in London named The Windward which was patented in 1938 alongside The Hurricane:-

An alternative to The Hurricane/Windward pipe is a regular pipe with removable wind shield
(making a change from the fixed, hinged or chain attached caps/crowns/shields of the period).
These examples stamped St. CLAIR / PATENT / LONDON MADE for bowl sizes 1, 2 and 3 made in aluminium and in silver (the silver caps stamped F.P ( Frederic Purnell) with marks for London 1906:-20201110_160712_resized.jpg

Relaxing after a wonderful salad, wild caught catfish and asparagus with red grapes and cherries for dessert. I'm now smoking Prince Albert in a 2020 smooth light brown, slight bent J. Everett straight grain chubby author with a spalted birch ferrule and a black saddle vulcanite stem in the military mount style. Community Coffee, neat, is my drink. Going to clean a few pipes before long.

Now smoking year 2014 HU Directors Cut in a smooth straight Lane era Charatan Executive Extra Large stretch apple with diagonal channel cuts on the lower right and left of the bowl along with a black vulcanite double comfort saddle stem. This pipe was formerly owned by actor William Conrad. I wish the manufacturer hadn't changed the formula on this blend, and reduce the perique content. Cheap so-and-sos didn't even have the common decency to tell the blend creator, Hans Wiedemann.
