Parcel with 2 pipes and some more baccy arrived today while I happened to be home for lunch, one of them is a beautiful Rattray's Fair Maid, maybe the prettiest pipe I own, and the other is this - a sarome cambridge billiard which I bought because I wanted a decent budget pipe and @BingBong gave them such high praise, so props to him! Giving the sarome its maiden smoke with some EMP just now and it really does smoke nicely, I was expecting it to be rougher around the edges until broken in but so far it's been fine IMG_20241126_132739.jpg

I haven’t smoked this pipe in awhile. Most of you know that I’m a big fan of Savinelli and its rich history. Many of you know the company was founded in 1876, and that Achille Savinelli, Sr. and his siblings opened shops in both Milan and Genova (Genoa). This is a Savinelli Meerschaum Tirolean with cherry shank and horn stem with orific bit from the shop run by Angelo Savinelli located at Galleria Mazzini 31 in Genova, Italy, probably from the late 19th or early 20th Century. I’m having Savinelli 145° (2024 Edition, No. 1,751/2,500) this time around.

This is a vintage postcard showing the Genova shop at Galleria Mazzini 31, which I believe closed after the death of Giorgio Savinelli in July 2012 (he was eighty-seven).
