HU Director’s Cut in a 1945-47 Pre-Republic Peterson Sterling 9BC.

Yours may not be a pre-republic. I thought mine was, but Al Jones, a moderator here, said differently: "Actually Mark Irwin and I learned that the 9BC (and 56) were not pre-Republic pipes, despite the stamping. The shape was only shown in US and Canadian catalogs in the 1950's. So, a little shrouded in mystery, I love that about Peterson! Unlike the XL90, its modern cousin, I've never seen a hallmarked 9BC (Shamrocks had nickel bands with faux hallmarks)."

First smoke of C&D Star of the East Gold in a Comoy's Straw Matt Kruger that belonged to my grandfather. This is easily my favorite of all C&D blends I've tried. If you like Presbyterian, Durbar, EMP, or other oriental forward blends, then I highly recommend this one. Lighter in latakia than Sobranie White, so it seems like a great warm weather Balkan as well.

Anything’s possible. I guess the only way to know for sure would be to find some 90+ year old guy who worked there back then or build a time machine and travel back to 1946....4CD92C69-2348-4986-B1FB-DB306B8961A5.jpeg

There is a possibility that it might have been a special order that wasn’t listed in the catalog until a certain date.

In any case, it’s a great old Pete, I like the way it feels in my hand, the way it hangs in my mouth, and the way it smokes...

Yeah, that does look like a pre-republic to me. I'll get Al to look at it.

I love mine as well.

Advertising materials, such as catalogs, only tell part of the story. They can be beneficial, however the backstory would be in the correspondence between the companies involved. Which was probably tossed in the incinerator decades ago.

Another thought. Did they have finished stummels sitting around that were repurposed for export? The world may never know...

Is it Bona-Fide Pre-Republic Pete? I don’t have a clue. Does it matter to me? Not really. It’s a great smoking pipe, and that’s all that really matters to me. ?

FWIW, here are the stampings on the band. No hallmarks, so I guess date would be open to interpretation...

When I bought mine, it was presented as a pre-republic. I was disappointed to find out otherwise, but I didn't pay a lot for it, it was in mint condition, and is a great smoker, so I got over it. I wouldn't trade or sell mine for anything.
