Yup. I use the Neerup leather mat for preparing my tobacco. Beneath the tin is space for tobacco, ash or whatever I want to use it for. See here:

Nice. I like the caddy a lot and dig the mat idea.

The caddy I use is similar, but has a small preparation area without a pipe stand. A picture is below.

I'm half-heartedly taking mental notes from others I see to determine what is most aesthetically pleasing yet efficient (in the hope I can find someone to commission my final idea one day).
