Yep, many local Alaskans and guides are going to 10mm auto loaders vs the old standby 44 magnum or 454 Casull.
Many people think 16 rounds of 200 grain bullets with 700fpe is superior to 6 rounds of 44 mag with 1100fpe.
From my own experience, I can fire a 10mm auto much faster and accurate than any revolver. I have yet to meet anyone who doesn't...except maybe Jerry Miculek. :)
When I worked in Alaska, we did 19 investigations and necropsies on brown bears that were killed by civilians. Eight of them were killed with auto loaders, five with big bore revolvers, the rest with long guns.
One was 45acp, one 9mm and six by 10mm.
The 10mm has plenty of power, higher capacity, less recoil, and usually quicker sight acquiring.
The only downside is autos are slightly more prone to malfunctions than revolvers.
Ive never had to kill a bear, but ive come very close several times. I never feel under gunned with 10mm. I have this glock, a Dan Wesson Kodiak, a Dan Wesson Bruin, and a S&W M&P.....all in 10mm.
Most brown bear attacks happen from less than 10 yards, and they are on you in less than 2 seconds. Not a lot of time to unshoulder a rifle, aim and fire. Handguns can be life or death in brown bear territory.
Good info and statistics, Sig. 🤠

They are calling for some badly needed rain this afternoon, which is good. It is as dry as a powder house......

In my trek to dig out some old pipes that I have not smoked in years, I found this old Meer bowl with long stem of peach wood. I bought it from a fellow historian who asked a very low price for it. I know nothing about it's history or origin but I thought the coloring of the bowl was beautiful. I probably have not smoked this pipe in a dozen years. It was a surprisingly good smoke and given the length of the stem, a very cool delivery. I had some C & D Palmetto Balkan, which is becoming one of my favorite go to tobaccos.

The pictures below show the pipe from different angles. (BTW, I have no idea why the string was attached, but I left it just as I bought it).

This last picture is for @JimInks as it shows one of our cats, Dino (my wife is a huge Dean Martin fan) on the loveseat with one of our Pitbulls. Dino is one of five cats we have and he loves all of the dogs and thinks he is a dog much of the time.......

Yup, with Buffalo Bore 200 grain hardcast.....just in case its an extra tough bear. :)
Great choice, I assume10mm whenever “bear, pistol, and knowledgeable/experienced” converge. I lucked out and got a few hundred 200gr DT big meplat projectiles when they sold some loose and run them at 1200 or 180XTP’s at 1300 dependent on expectations.

My rough country rest with the Pete 313 I’ll be having C&D XXV Dawn in this morning.

Passing the last quarter of this bowl of year 2024 Edward G. Robinson's Pipe Blend in a 2014 Basil Meadows smooth slight bend squashed tomato with an aluminum band and a black pearl acrylic stem in the military mount style. M'lady and I fed our cats and three ferals. The sun is out for the first time in three days. Ice water and bergs is my drink.
