Just finished smoking year 2014 Edgeworth Ready Rubbed Match in a very much appreciated 1979 brown, slight bend grain etched flat front Stanwell Rego 969-48 (09) with a black vulcanite saddle stem. Sleepy Suzy jumped down from my chair to eat once Tomato the Brave finished. He came in and jumped on my lap and demanding attention. He just got up, and wanted out.

Now smoking first production Watch City American Cut Plug Mixture in a straight smooth brown Algerian briar family era Barling’s Make Billiard 6 with a tapered black vulcanite stem. The stampings suggest 1930s, but the “6” is a previously unknown stamp number as is its placement. This pipe is from the estate of David Cuneo. I'll probably end the day with this smoke.

Just took this photo of my Praying Mantis friend, who happens to be under my patio table tonight.

In young praying mantises (nymphs), wings are absent. This is a typical feature of incomplete metamorphosis (hemimetaboly). Mantises do not have a pupal stage; instead, they develop through a series of molts from a larval-like nymph to the adult form (imago). Wings appear only after the final molt, when the nymph becomes a fully developed adult. In most species, this occurs at the 5th to 7th molt, depending on the species and sex.

Wow, pretty neat! My knowledge of mantises just increased by a factor of about 4,000. :) Thanks!
I don't see any wings, so is this a young mantis then? It's not tiny by any means -- nearly 2 inches long.
Btw, the photo is right-side-up -- it just happens to be hanging under the table. LOL

Well, since I’m a biologist by training, I just can’t resist commenting on photos like this 🤣. Actually, he’ll most likely grow wings after the next molt. Let’s keep watching 😉
