Got up stupid early and finished 18 holes before 11:15 - rewarding myself now with a little compare and contrast: McC Frog Morton on the Bayou in a Bullfrog "Gumnut" vs a Nate King meerschaum prince vs a Scottie Piersel morta chimney-dog (results after the jump):

Gumnut v Meer Prince seems like a reasonable comp as they are roughly similar in bowl size/shape - taste seemed "cleaner" to my palette from the meerschaum, marginally so though.

The Morta Chimney-dog probably smoked the best. Taste-wise closer to the meerschaum than the briar but much cooler. I suspect the shape/size/depth will play a lot into that. Would be curious to get a couple of pipes that are exactly the same shape and size but in different materials to do a direct comparisons. ... Maybe a new project...

In anticipation of another HU Tobacco order, I cracked a tin of Directors Cut. I have read mixed opinions, most love it but some don’t. I really enjoyed it. This was one of the few blends I have smoked that actually tasted better the harder I puffed, especially the last third. This VaPer is definitely top-notch, and in my opinion will only get better with age. Now the long wait starts until my order arrives.

Spilman Mixture in a Iwan Ries house pipe by Benton, a Canada shape with an XL chamber, made of Algerian briar; as near as I can tell, Benton is out of business, but if you see these on eBay or somewhere, they are good pipes that probably don't cost much.
